Joel p.o.v

"Ellie, let's go. I know you don't want me to come with you...but I'd like to so I can see if there's anything you need to improve on or if it's just the area, " I say while tying my shoelace.

I don't hear a response. I take a breath,

"Ellie?" I try again.

Silence.

"I'm fine with it Joel," Ellie says muttering, with a sting of attitude with it.

I sigh knowing she'd rather not have me come along, but I need to make sure everything's going alright. Sometimes when I wouldn't be having any luck, it'd be because I was missing something or I was walking too loud or whatever it was. If I could help Ellie, I bet it would raise up her spirits. I pick up my bow and slide it on to my back. Ellie does the same with hers and her switchblade is pushed into her jeans pocket. I put a handgun in the back of my jeans, I look over to the table by the back door which lies another handgun.

"Ellie, do you want your new handgun? I haven't seen you touch it for a couple months now, " I ask her as she ties her shoe.

She pauses, looking up at me.

"Joel, I'm okay. I can handle myself without a gun,"

"Really? It was only a couple of years ago that I couldn't get you to take anything but a gun!" I say surprised.

She glares at me and doesn't fight me on it, she instead sighs. Knowing she's done talking about it, I stop. My curiosity rises as we're about to head out the door, passing the table, I reach over and pick up the gun, checking the clip.

"Joel you don't have to look there! " Ellie says raising her voice. I continue to slide the clip out, knowing something is up.

Once the clip is out, it's empty. No bullets no nothing. I look at Ellie, almost amused at her. She looks down at her feet and fiddles with her hands.

"Ellie, all you had to do was tell me it was empty. We have plenty of ammo," I say to her.

"I know, but I didn't know how to load the clips again. Like, put bullets in them. I looked in storage and all we had were bullets but no clips so I gave up on filling them. I decided I needed a gun like yours where it has 5 slots to put bullets in and you never need a clip," she says a little upset.

I chuckle a little under my breath.

"Ellie I can teach you how to load the clips, it's pretty easy once you get it. The reason why I haven't given you a revolver yet is because they take a lot of time to reload when you're in a fight and I don't want to lose you because you were reloading a gun. I know I gave you one earlier, but that's when I was with you,"

"Okay, " Ellie replies. "But I...never mind,"

Ellie stops talking and walks out the door, pushing past me. I look over the handgun again, she knows how to change the clips and add bullets. It's very simple and I've seen her do it before. I wonder why she doesn't-

"Joel? Are you coming?" I hear Ellie say from outside. I take a deep breath, and put the gun down.

"Yes I'm coming."

"This is where I was before," Ellie whispers under her breath.

We have come to an open area, with lots of trees with low branches to climb onto. Ellie is looking around worriedly, almost as if she is expecting something.

"Joel can we hurry this up? I don't want to stick around for very long," she tells me while pulling on my sleeve. I chuckle a little bit, reminding me of Sarah when she would be scared of something.
