Ellie POV
The rain lightly splashes on my skin as we head towards the mountains. We are literally only days away from Jackson, from Tommy, from...home. Joel told me a couple days ago that we needed to keep our eyes peeled for Tommy or Maria, especially if they've been searching for us this whole time. They knew we were gonna be gone for a couple of months, but not this long. We were able to get a car a couple days after the gas station. It took us pretty far before it was raining too much and it got stuck in the mud. Joel and I decided we'd travel faster if we just started walking.
I push myself harder than I should everyday because we are so close. I just want to be home, to be safe, dry, fed, and I miss my room more than anything. I don't know if I'll be able to sleep in my room for quite a while because I have to be close to Joel, even if we were in the same house, I need him close by. We've been through so much that it scares me to not be close to him. I've panicked a couple times since we left the gas station, with all the cool space stuff, and Joel has been there through all of it. He holds me until I calm down and breathe. The good thing is that I don't have a panic attack every day anymore, it's been every other day.
I have nightmares almost every night from when Joel and I were tortured. I can still hear his cries when they'd beat him or his screams when they'd hurt me and he'd watch it happen, not being able to help me. Near the end, when Clara was going to kill us on that stage in front of the whole community, both Joel and I had given up hope. Our bodies were barely surviving and I'm surprised that Finn didn't die before that night. He was a literal skeleton with skin and a little bit of hair. Joel reminds me that Finn probably fought as hard as he did because he had something to fight for. Me and his unborn child.
We argued over the fact that Finn's other two kids were also important to him but Joel told me that the way that the community was set up, they didn't want you to grow attached to anyone because people die way too often. It makes sense when Finn was not that attached to his kids because he knew life was short. I argued that Finn cared so much about me and the kid that it didn't make sense for him to just forget about his other two kids. He watched them both die and he did not mourn for them.
Joel told me that people change and maybe Finn saw it as a fresh start. Like those families in books and movies, where the dad leaves his family and has a new life with another woman and his "new" family. Finn never wanted to talk about the future. When I'd ask him about what we were gonna do when this baby was born, he was optimistic then would quickly tell me that we needed to survive till then. I guess I never wanted to talk about it either when he'd ask me about it.
Mud slushes as I step into a small hole, my converse are no longer new and they're a bit worn. The laces are no longer white and the white sides have scuffs on them. As long as they're holding and not tearing, the shoes still work. I sigh and keep walking next to Joel. He walks right beside me now as we travel. I think he's worried I'm gonna stroke out and fall to the ground so he needs to be right here for when that happens. We're hoping that we'll find the dam or one of the lookouts because then we'd be so close to home.
Thunder gently booms as we continue on. The rain is starting to come down harder as we continue on. It's only the afternoon but it's dark enough that you'd think it was closer to nighttime.
"You doing okay, Ellie?" Joel asks, his clothes are starting to get drenched.
"Yeah, I'm doing fine," My teeth chatter slightly. "Let's keep going until we find a cabin or a house or something, I just want to be dry,"
"Keep an eye out," He says to me. I nod even though he doesn't see me do it.
We continue walking through the mud and the rain is getting harder and harder every minute. The thunder booms and makes the ground shake a little bit. Now it's too much.
