You weren't planning on leaving, were you?

Joel POV

"Okay Rick, we're leaving tonight on your shift. We'll wait for your signal, then we'll climb that big oak, go across the branch, then let go and fall into the last little bit of snow that banks up against the wall. Then we only have about five minutes before the new guard comes to be out of sight, out of hearing range. Has there been any sightings of infected around the area?" I ask.

"No, not lately. When the first rain came, there was about five that showed up around the edge, but the guards killed them. When the snow melts, they seem to migrate back to us because they can hear us again," He says.

"I see, so we shouldn't have a problem with the infected?" I ask.

"Your worst problem will be the dark, you won't be able to see and there won't be a moon to guide you," He says. "If you were still leaving a week from now, you'd have the full moon but tonight is gonna be tricky,"

I nod and wave goodbye as he walks off, pretending we weren't talking in the first place. I look around the cafeteria and no one seems to notice...but we like to be careful. I look down at my plate of eggs which normally, I'd gobble down within seconds, but my stomach is just turning in circles. I should eat, save up energy for tonight.

I see Ellie walking through the cafeteria as I slowly eat my eggs, making my stomach handle it. She walks over to my table, smiling.

"Good morning, Joel," She says, sitting down. She points to my eggs, "Real food? That's awesome!"

"Yes, but I'm almost too nervous to eat," I say, my stomach churning.

"Me too, but tonight is the night," She whispers. "Who knows when we'll eat a meal again...Have you seen Finn? He wasn't at the cabin when I woke up," she says.

"No, he hasn't been here," I say. Ellie almost immediately looks worried.

"You think Clara took him?" She says under her breath.

"No, I don't think so. Maybe he's just scouting around to make sure we get out safe and quickly tonight. Maybe he's working in the lab?" I say to her, eating the last bit of egg on my plate.

"Not in the lab, Clara is there. Maybe scouting but he didn't leave a note or anything," she says.

"He's fine, I'm sure," I tell her. She nods and stands back up.

"Well, I need to get my bag ready. I'm also gonna take a long, hot shower since it's gonna be awhile, and maybe a nap," She says, thinking.

"Sounds like a plan, I'll come over for lunch so we can discuss some more things, in private," I say to her.

"Okay, I'll be there," She says, almost skipping off. I chuckle to myself and look down at my empty plate. Those eggs feel okay for now. No one in the cafeteria seems to care about our conversations here in the cafeteria, nor care about us so I'm not surprised that anyone caught on to us planning to leave. They'd probably want to leave too if they could.

Ellie POV

"Finn, where the hell have you been?" I ask as he walks through the door. Joel is sitting by me on the couch, watching the small flames coming from the fireplace.

"I've been down to the daycare, I said goodbye to Eliza," He says.

"I thought you weren't supposed to see her anymore," I say to him.

"Yeah, it's more of a 'my choice' thing right now since she's so young. I thought I'd at least give her the chance to say goodbye. I left a note and a picture of me in her belongings. Kara, the daycare chief, won't say anything about it but Eliza didn't seem to recognize me," He says, not looking at me as he walks across the room.
