Joel POV
"Here it is!" I yell out as I pull the guitar out of the closet. It was buried under a lot of clothes.
"Oh my god! Thank you!" Ellie celebrates. She gives me a quick hug before she takes it from me and starts to tune it. I chuckle and sit down beside her on her bed.
"You think you remember how to play? It's been about a year-"
"You didn't play for years and still had the skills," She says to me, jokingly. "I'm sure I'll remember a couple of songs, I'll need a lot of help though,"
I smile and nod, knowing what she's asking me.
"Fuck yeah!" She responds, laughing. I laugh with her and she gets the guitar tuned.
She strums a couple of strums and tries to play what she remembers. I didn't teach her a whole lot before we decided to leave for a bit but she remembered how to tune it and remembers some chords. Better than I thought.
"When Riley is old enough to hold a guitar, can you teach her too?" Ellie asks.
"I'll be teaching her before she can even walk," I conclude. Ellie giggles and hands me the guitar.
"Can you play something? I can't remember much," she says, defeated.
I nod and double-check the tuning, positioning my hands. I think of what I want to play and look to Ellie.
"What about that song we both learned?" I ask.
"The stranger one?" She asks.
"Yes, the stranger one," I chuckle.
I position my fingers so I cap the 3rd fret and start with an E minor chord. Ellie gently bobs her head along as she waits for her cue to start singing. My fingers fumble a little from not remembering exactly how the plucking goes but my fingers recover once the muscle memory kicks in.
Ellie starts to sing, "I'm just a poor, wayfaring stranger..."
She continues to sing as we go through the song and both of the verses. When we get to the third verse, I clear my throat and start to sing. My voice is raspy but I manage to sing clearly. Ellie smiles as I sing through the verse, she always loves to listen to me sing even if I don't want her to listen. She tells me that I probably would've been a famous singer if the outbreak didn't happen.
On the last chorus before the song ends, Ellie sings with me and our voices glide together. I've missed these kinds of nights, just a couple minutes of pure bliss, no worries in the world. Just Ellie, myself, and the music. It's a very peaceful moment.
I play the last chord of the song as it ends and Ellie jumps up excitedly.
"We should totally sing in the talent show this fall!" She says to me.
"Uh, no," I respond, shaking my head.
"Come on, Joel! We need to try things we didn't before cause if we don't and we end up dying, we'll always regret it," She says to me.
"When did you become such an optimist for the future?" I chuckle.
"Since I almost died with both Riley's and every time I have almost died before, in-between, and after that," She says to me.
"I don't know," I say, actually thinking about it.
"We can start small, like at family dinner or even when we do a patrol dinner just to warm up to the town talent show," She says.
"Now, normally you would be terrified to bring attention to yourself like that," I question. "and you only sing infront of me or Riley,"
"Well, I'm ready to branch out and try new things," She says to me.
