Ellie P.O.V.
"We leave tomorrow. Pack up what you'd like, bring extra socks, tampons, whatever. Just make it light so if we need to run, we can,"
Joel is giving me another lecture on what I should and shouldn't carry. I've been with him for almost 3 years now and all the sudden, he's become more of a parental figure. For some reason, he's becoming more protective as well.
"Ellie?"
He won't let me out of his sight lately either, not in a creepy way. I'll go outside to chop some wood and he'd be watching out the window, making sure I wouldn't screw up somehow. I go outside to have some alone time in the snow and he'd ask to come, and if he didn't, he'd watch me till I disappeared into the woods for a bit. I don't know what's going through his head.
"Ellie, I get if you don't want to leave. We have everything here, but the generator is going to be out of fuel in a couple hours. It is the beginning of winter and the snow is already pounding down hard. We have got to get to Tommy's as soon as possible. They have got food, shelter, warmth-"
"Okay Joel, I get it!" I cut him off a bit rudely, getting out of my fantasy. "I know why we've got to leave but I love the peace and serenity here. We're alone, there are no infected or hunters-"
"But there is!" He yells back.
"What do you-"
"I mean those men you ran into! It'll be hard to find this place, plus get past the fence, but the generator is going to stop soon and we won't have that protection anymore. Who knows! They might be watching the house right now!" He yells at me.
"Who cares! They're scared of me cause I killed one of their men!" I yell back.
"Exactly Ellie! You killed one of them! They probably want revenge! That family that lost their dad probably want you to feel their pain,"
I puff, "So?"
"So that means they're out for blood. We can't trust them," he says to me.
I'm about to retort when he gives me a look that scares me. I have never seen this look before, only once when he got mad at me when I ran off with a horse at Tommy's. I know to stop.
"Okay. Anything you say goes," I say.
He chuckles to himself, "Ellie, you rememb-"
The lights start to flicker crazily. I hear a beep from the kitchen, probably the stove or microwave. Joel grabs my arm and pulls me away from the window.
"Is that the generator?" I ask Joel.
"I hope so," he says.
He looks out towards the fence,
"There's no one on the fence, it usually just flickers once if something or someone touches it," he says under his breath.
"So what is this?" I ask.
"I'm not sure. Usually, when a generator goes out, it doesn't go crazy like this. It just slowly dims out," he says with a concerned voice, "or cuts out in a snap."
Within seconds, the power sparks out and the big house is now quiet and dark. The light from outside seeps in through the windows, I can feel the chilly air screaming through the house. Joel is holding me tightly. I shift a little so he knows I'm still in his grip. He loosens his grip and I walk towards the window.
"We leave tomorrow before dawn?" I ask, watching the sun set in this day. I don't fight him more on wanting to stay. It doesn't feel homely anymore. Joel answers me with a sigh,
