Joel POV

I'm in the Elevator holding Ellie in my arms, I had to save her from the fireflies, they were going to kill her. I watch the elevator go down the stops, all the way to the basement. Once it stops and the doors open, I hit the stop switch.

"Okay, come on. Come on," I say to myself. I walk briskly out of the elevator before I'm stopped.

"You can't save her," I hear Marlene say to me. I see her pointing a gun at me, aiming towards Ellie and I. "Even if you get her out of here, then what? How long before she's torn to pieces by a pack of clickers? That is if she hasn't been raped or murdered first,"

"That ain't for you to decide," I say to her, anger filling up in my chest.

"It's what she'd want," Marlene pauses. I look to the ground for a moment. "and you know it,"

I keep my eyes on Marlene as I adjust the way I am holding Ellie.

"Look," Marlene continues, "You can still do the right thing here...she won't feel anything,"

I stand there and ponder hard at my choices. I can still feel my gun in my left hand from when I ran from the soldiers. Marlene starts to walk towards me slowly. I continue to think until I make my decision. I glare at Marlene as I turn quickly towards her and fire my gun, holding my breath. I release the tension in my shoulders when she falls to the ground.

Quickly, I put Ellie into the backseat of the closest truck and close her in. I turn to Marlene and walk over to her. Marlene is struggling and is swimming in her own pool of blood.

"Wait! Let me go!" Marlene pleads, hand outreached towards me. "Please,"

"You'd just come after her," I say to her as I shoot her in the head.

I have to be careful trusting Finn. Marlene was right...Ellie didn't die from the disease first. She was raped...almost murdered. She was so close to dying...

"Joel, I'm a little cold," Ellie tells me as she pokes me in the arm. I look to her and she is sitting up in her hospital bed. She has sweats and a long sleeve sweater on, and those non-skid hospital socks which are not warm but provide a little traction.

Ellie goes home today, well, she goes back to Finn's house. I'm still stuck in the construction housing for now until we can figure out and talk to Clara about everything. Ron doesn't seem to care too much but Clara is the disciplinarian of the group so her decision is THE decision. I've been with Ellie for about three weeks now, she was in and out of sleep for about a week and then she started to heal up very quickly since. I insisted she stay in bed for another week but she says 'How am I supposed to gain my strength back if I just lay in a bed? I need to be prepared to fight and run when it's time'.

I really tried to even let her stay just a couple more days so they can monitor her but she insisted. Finn says he will watch her and keep a very close eye on her. I thought he was joking when he said he would have someone watch his daughter so he can be with Ellie, but I knew very quickly that he wasn't kidding. He seems to not really care about his daughter that much...

"Joel, a coat or blanket please?" Ellie asks me again and she punches me softly in the arm.

"Ellie, are you sure you-" I start.

"Yes! I need to get out of here and Finn is going to take care of me," She tells me...looking to her feet.

"But Aaron-" I start but can't finish. My throat tightens as I look to her, then at my feet.
