Olanna's POV
I remember when I was to wed Tochukwu. It was remaining two nights to our wedding ceremony but it felt like a whole season. Nneka and Nnenna made fun of how impatient I was.
But this four days came like it was the same day the wedding was postponed.
I couldn't believe my sister did this to me. How could she. I knew she is ambitious. But I never knew she could sacrifice someone else for her stupid ambitions. And that person happens to be me.
And Tochukwu, my Tochi, my husband.... "We are through my princess" that brought me out of my thoughts and I grew more sad.
I thought of running away that night, but on a second thought I realized it was foolish. With my Father's guards and his guards I wouldn't run far. Father already placed guards at the four corners of my hut.
So I decided I was going to end it all. I had thought of how peaceful and wonderful it would be seeing Mother once again.
But Father was ahead of me again. He had already ordered the maids to clear out any form of weapon in my hut. The only thing in my hut besides my bed was a mat on the floor.
This had saddened me more. Father had come to my hut on the second day and had feed me himself after he heard that I wasn't touching my food. I had eaten it like a lifeless person swallowing and opening my mouth when asked to.
I knew this was a way of showing me that his hands were tied and that he was grieving also. I don't blame him. I couldn't blame him for he had given me the free will to marry a man that I loved. One who had rejected me in-front of the whole village.
"Olanna" I jolted back to reality when I heard my name only to realize that we were at the throne grounds. I surveyed my surroundings and saw everyone looking at me expectedly.
The Chiefs were all in their ceremonial attire and the ceremony had already began. King Edikan and his people were at the far end of the throne grounds all neatly dressed. The villagers who were not allowed to enter the throne grounds were all watching the event from the fence.
They were all still looking at me expectedly. "Olanna" It was Nneka. I didn't even know she was beside me. If she was at my right hand side then Nnenna should be here as well. I turned towards my left side and saw Nnenna. She and Nneka wore the same type of wrappers. Oh! They were supposed to lead me to my husband.
That was when I looked at Father's throne and saw him holding a cup of palm wine. Oh Yes I was supposed to take the wine from father and give it to my husband as soon as I find him in the crowd to show that I accept him.
I walked down to the throne were Father was sitting, I bowed and took the wine. I was going towards were Edikan and his people were sitting when I saw him.
Why was he here? To mock me? Oh maybe he wanted to make sure that the marriage held. Or was he here to take me back? Return the payment back to Edikan?
I heard someone clear their throat. I didn't need to turn to know it was Father. That was when I realized that I had strayed from Edikan's part and was about heading to were Tochukwu was.
I composed myself and turned towards were Edikan was sitting. When I got there I knelt down took a sip of the palm wine and gave him the rest which he drank in one gulp. Cheers erupted as people clapped.
He helped me up to my feet and towards an empty seat beside his obviously meant for me as the sound of drums broke out and dancers filled the arena. More wine was brought and food was served.
I guess I spaced out because the next thing I know Eno- Obong was telling me that it was time to go. Go where? I wanted to ask "where" but I was to tired to even open my mouth to ask.
