Olanna's POV
"Please Olannna tell me you are not seriously thinking of making that girl the second Queen. Have it in mind that who ever you choose is going to be your rival" Nnenna screeched. Shockingly Nneka has being very quiet. I was actually hoping that she would be the one to protest. But she has being very quiet instead.
"Well Nneka what do you have to say?" I finally asked her. She just shrugged "she is a good candidate for the post". "What!" I and Nnenna said simultaneously. Okay I agree with that but I didn't expect to be hearing such from her.
"She seems like a nice person. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't be careful around her." she said further. "Of course it's not like we are going to be best friends. But I doubt that we would fight often when she finds out that am not a rival when it comes to seeking the King's affection" I said. "I still don't agree to this. But come to think of it, what is a palace without drama? Besides I want to end up telling you, 'I told you so" Nnenna said giving up.
We finally sent a message to the King that it was time to call the results. I asked the guards to open the gates to let the people in. By the time he arrived at the throne grounds it was buzzing with people and the three maidens were at the center of it all.
Edikan finally looked at me and nodded. Immediately I stood up everywhere be came silent. "Greetings my people" I started they all echoed a 'greetings my queen or your Majesty' of their own. "It's being many moons since this bridal selection which is ending today started. It started with all the maidens in the Kingdom and it's ending with this three standing before us today. These three surpassed all the tests and tasks presented to them. But today after screening them one shall emerge as the winner.
Pause
I have finally decided who I believe is suited to be by the King." I paused again for dramatic effects
"With that said the winner of this bridal selection is....
Ekemini's POV
The Queen motioned for me to seat when we approached the throne ground. "So, Ekemini" she said and I couldn't help but frown. "That is your name is it not?" She asked. "It is my Queen." I replied. I didn't expect her to remember my name since she never addressed me before. Well it seems I left an impression after that stunt. And I know it's not a good one.
"So, what do you have to offer when you become Queen?" She asked.
What do I have to offer? Is there anything else to offer other than tending to the King's personal needs? Mother had drilled it in me that I have to be as submissive as possible to the King for two strong people cannot coexist in the same household, for it will only bring about fights. She had also said that strong men tend to take submissive and beautiful women as wives, whose work was to bear his heirs and run the household. But looking at the Queen now I think mother was wrong. The King had only glanced at me once with all this attire and make up, which I am still thinking might be from my imagination. Yet he couldn't take his eyes off his Queen who had little beads and no make up to wear.
"We don't have all day Ekemini" her voice jarred me back to reality. I finally sat up straight and answered. "A Queen is the mother and pillar of the Kingdom and her King. I tend to be just that your Highness." I answered praying to the gods that was right and I wasn't to forward since she is the first wife.
She just sat there looking at me like I had grown two heads "Explain" she finally said.
"As the Kings wife to be, I will always be there to support him and also ensure that he is mentally and physically sound, for only a healthy King can rule a Kingdom properly, bear his children and also bring them up according to our customs and traditions, with good morals of course. I will also help when and if am needed to make suggestions or throw in an opinion about the smooth running of the Kingdom. "I replied. I said that last part with uncertainty, but looking at how the King allows the Queen to do most duties I hope am right.
