Edikan's Pov
I watched Olanna and her maids or rather her friends walk back to their huts. She looked so tired. Maybe I should have called for the meeting tomorrow instead of tonight. I thought.
I was still looking at her when I heard a sigh "That was entertaining" she said making me roll my eyes. "I thought you said you will side me in this" I told her frowning. "But I did. I never said anything to contradict you, did I" she asked. "Exactly you didn't say anything at all. You just sat there and kept on laughing" I told her. "Well like I said it was entertaining. So I decided to sit and watch. I believe it wouldn't have being entertaining as it was if I had decided to say anything" she said shrugging.
"So you will be talking to the Head families then?" She asked. "No" I said. "But you said..." "I know what I said Eka" I interrupted.
She narrowed her eyes. "So, you are going to make Olanna believe you will be talking to the Head families when in reality you are just using it to prolong the inevitable?" She asked. "Just remember you agreed to be on my side" I told her. "This is interesting" she said surprisingly "You are not going to scold me?" I asked "Why in the gods name will I scold the King?" She asked amusingly.
"I wonder how this is going to end?" She said thoughtfully. "What do you mean?" I asked "Never mind. I was wondering who would win but I already know" she said. I raised my brow at her and gave her a smug smile. I know that I would win if course. I always do.
"Why are you looking all smug? Do you think I was referring to you? You have no chance when it comes to Olanna." She said and I stopped smiling. "What do you mean?" I asked. "Haven't you noticed that when it comes to anything concerning Olanna you get confused on how to handle the situation?" She noticed.
I tried to school my face to make sure it doesn't show any emotions. "I don't know what you are talking about Eka" I told her. "Exactly what am saying Edikan. You don't always know what am talking about when it's about Olanna" she said. I opened my mouth but nothing came out of it. "Well good night son" she said already taking her leave.

"Exactly what am saying Edikan. You don't always know what am talking about when it's about Olanna"
I stared at the beams of my hut as Eka's voice echoed in my head. Do I have feelings for Olanna? I believe not.. Am I attracted to her? Yes I am. Her beauty is so defined that heads turn whenever she walks by. Any man will be attracted to Olanna. I wonder why Eka keeps insisting that I admit I have feelings for her when I don't.
I respect her as a man respects a woman who is his wife. So why is Eka insisting that I admit what I don't feel?
Truly I have never being attracted to a maiden this strongly before. I am no wayward man neither am I a boy. I know quite well about what being with a woman entails. I have had an intercourse once and decided never to act on my desires again till I take a wife, after the last maiden got hung on the fact that I was to be her husband since we shared the same bed. Luckily for me she was neither pregnant nor was she a virgin by the time I had my time with her. Maybe it's because I haven't being with a woman since then that is why I feel so much attraction towards Olanna.
Yes that definitely is the reason. That was the last thought on my mind before I drifted to sleep.
Ekong's POV
Watching my King and his Queen from the shadows is quite entertaining I must say. Every moment they share together is always entertaining to watch. And I agree with Eka Iyene, my King won't be winning this one.
It's being two days since that day and Edikan has decided it was better to trick Olanna, if only he knows. I almost snorted out loud as I stood beside Edikan under the tree behind his hut.
"I have told you several times that you don't have to stand like a molded man when we are alone. Especially when we are supposed to be relaxed." I heard him say. "The more reason I need to be at alert my King. We can't be relaxing at the same time" I responded still standing in my position. "That is why there are other guards positioned around us. They are supposed to be the ones alert at this time" he said trying to reason with me. I decided not to reply him.
He sighed tiredly when I didn't respond. "Am bored." He said lying done in the tree trunk. "Should I get a maid to serve you roasted fish and palm wine?" I asked. He waved me off.
We stayed in silence after that. I watched him as he became relaxed. When his heart beat and breathing became even I knew that he has fallen asleep. Good. He needs it.
I finally decided to seat after I have made sure all the guards were at their posts and vigilant. I sat down with the tree behind me and rested my back on it, closed my eyes and relaxed allowing my heartbeat to be in rhythm with Edikan's
************
One would wonder why a guard would be sleeping on duty. Little did they know that this method of relaxation made me more lethal more alert. For as the rhythm of my heart is down so has my senses heightened.
I heard footsteps two huts away from the King's, as the sound became nearer and louder I quickly identified that it was a female. I sighed getting irritated. I just want a moment of silence and relaxation.
But no, the footsteps kept coming closer. What got my attention was that she didn't stop when she got to the guards. I was sure that this female was definitely not Eka. Whoever it was wasn't a stranger as well since she passed the guards without being questioned.
I started getting relaxed. But the footsteps slowed and came to a stop. Maybe if the person believe that we are sleeping they will head back.
Well that was what I thought. Instead I felt the air shift. Someone was moving but no footsteps was heard. If not for my training as a warrior I wouldn't have noticed this. I remained in my position. The act of surprise will have to do. I felt a presence looming over me before a hand reached for the hilt of the dagger tied to my waist. Without wasting a breath I pulled out another dagger I normally tie on my thigh and went straight for the maiden's throat.
But the face that came to my view made me pause. I never thought of anyone who would pull such stunt at the moment. But if I were to think of anyone she would never be in my list.
