Olanna's POV
8 contestants left. I couldn't have being more relieved that this bridal selection was coming to an end. In order to end it as fast as possible I have decided that the bridal selections will be done two days intervals after each day.
I was about heading to my hut when a maid rushed to tell me that the King has summoned me. I frowned, I just wanted to rest. Well.... I have things to discuss with him anyways.
I made my way to his hut and found him under the shade close to it. I wouldn't lie when I said that I was surprised when he asked nicely that I join him for lunch. We ate in silence but it was a bit soothing.
Did you enjoy today's task?" I asked. "I think I did" I raised a brow. But he didn't elaborate. "Why did you appoint me to call the results?" He asked. "Well... nothing really." I now it was his turn to raise a brow. I smiled "Unlike you I will elaborate. The competition is more intense when the numbers becomes less. Some of them might think that they were disqualified because I was envious of them. I am the Queen after all. So if you don't mind I would like for you to be the one to call the results from now on" I told
I watched him frown. I hope he doesn't mind. I waited for him to respond but he didn't say anything. What is he thinking?!!
"My King?" His frown deepened. Was it something I said? I tried to lower my voice to a whisper "My King?" "Don't call me that!!" He boomed.
I was taken aback a bit but regained myself immediately. What was I thinking? Olanna how can you forget that he will always be rude? "I am sorry if I had said anything that offended you" I said as I got up "If you don't mind I will be taking my leave now" I said and started making my way to my hut without looking back. Eka Iyene taught me that I have to wait to be excused and never walk out on the King. But I don't care right now for if I remained there I would have done worse than walking out on the King.
***************
"Oh I can't believe that girl left her friends just so she could pair up with the crafts man's daughter" Nnenna said. "I am not surprised at all. I mean merely looking at her you would know that she would do anything to win this competition. Honestly if it were me I would have disqualified her the first day for just looking am me the wrong way" Nneka said "That means you would have disqualified all the maidens on the first day then?" Nnenna said "Ah you so get me my friend. I mean that will make the bridal selection end quickly" Nneka said nonchalantly as she chews on a meat bone.
We always gather in my room to discuss about what occurred during the selections and also bring out ideas on what the next one will be like. But right now am sleepy thanks to Nnenna who is kind enough to help me massage my feet.
"Ola What do you think about what happened today with that girl and the crafts man's daughter?" I heard Nnenna ask. "Well.... I don't know what to think of that. But I believe they know each other" I said "Of course they know each other the grew up in the same village" Nneka said "No, I mean it's like they were friends before." I said. The room became silent. I raised my head from my lying position to look at them. They were looking at me like I have grown two heads. "What" I asked. "I doubt that they are polar opposites, they can't be friends" Nnenna said as Nneka nodded. I just shrugged. "I was watching them almost the whole time. Ekemini's smile looked genuine while they were working" Nneka snorted "of course it would look genuine. She needed to pass this round." "I doubt that" I mumbled.
It seems they both noticed my struggle with being sleepy and talking at the same time that they decided not to include me in their conversation. There voices are getting fainter, any moment now I would go into a peaceful slumber.
