We are in different places. We are... truly… in different places.”

Chapter 12
the Deity, the Saint, and the Mere Mortal

the Deity

THIS IS the police! Freeze!”

That made the girl inside the passing by air-conditioned car look outside. A boy in a school uniform same as hers is being chased by the policeman. She immediately told the driver to stop the car.

“Where are you going?”

“I’ll be back!”

She ran after them. The boy ran as fast as he could until his thinning slippers snapped. She looked at the slippers until she passed through it. Next she saw on the street is a piece of bread. That made her stop from running. She saw another two fell from the paper bag the boy is holding. She picked it up, dust it off, and took a bite. She immediately spit it out. “Seriously? Why is he throwing his life away for this garbage?!”

She looked ahead again. The boy already stopped running. Soon after the policeman captured him. The boy stuffed himself with the remaining bread on the destroyed bag while crying. That made her look at the same bread on her hands. “What a stupid.”

“You’re awake?”

“Where are we?”

“This is the hospital. You fainted.”
Laisa helped herself sit. Gabriel handed her an opened bottle of mineral water. “You’re stressed, and a little dehydrated. So drink that.”

Laisa finished half of the bottled water and handed it back to Gabriel. He closed it and put it inside his backpack. “I can be discharged right now, right?”
“Yeah.”

“Okay. I’ll go pay the bills.”

Gabriel held her arm to stop her from standing. “I already did.”

“How much was it? I’ll pay you.”

“Laisa…”

“I know I can’t ask two things from you at the same time.” She pulled her arms from Gabriel’s hands. Gabriel's eyes nailed on his hands that can still feel Laisa’s warmth. He slowly pocketed it. “Let me sleep at your place. For the last time.”

the Saint

IT’S BEEN a long time, Ms. Santa-Ana.”

Ria returned Nurse Park’s bright smile. The latter immediately lead her to her mom’s room. “The patient is still on check-up. Please wait inside for a while.”

“Check-up? My mom’s fine, right?”

“Of course. It’s just regular tests we do from time to time.”

Ria entered the room alone. Nurse Park held on the door. “Please be comfortable.”

The nurse closed the door. Ria stayed standing near the door and looked around. She’s been here countless times but she haven’t actually payed close attention to the room since her eyes only looks at her mom, while thinking hard on how to impress her.

It’s suffocating.

“Wait!” Good thing Nurse Park is still on sight. Ria ran towards her. “Can I meet my mom outside instead?”
