"No, no, no.... no, no," I frantically paced around. What if Amy got kidnapped by the Neverseen? What if she gets hurt? I pounded my head against the wall.
"Sophie, what's wrong?" Edaline, my adoptive mother, asked gently. She was in her turquoise nightgown which matched her turquoise eyes, which had dark circles under them and her hair was all over the place. To be fair, it was 5 in the morning. I didn't want to worry Edaline more than she already was. But I had to tell someone.
"It's Amy. She used her emergency imparter to call me. She said she may have spotted someone from the Neverseen near her house. She was telling me about it until she screamed and the imparter turned off," I explained.
"Should we inform the Black Swan?" Edaline asked.
I started to shake my head. But then I realized that I couldn't do it alone. Not just because I needed the Black Swan's technology to track the signal. The last time I did an assignment by myself... I failed. I needed a team.
"Yeah. Let's tell Mr. Forkle," I decided.
I got my imparter. "Show me Mr. Forkle," I commanded. Mr. Forkle's face showed up on the screen.
"You kids, never letting anyone sleep," Mr. Forkle muttered using his two favorite words. "What's wrong Sophie?" Mr. Forkle asked. I explained everything that happened with Amy. When I was done, he frowned.
"We'll meet in the morning in Havenfield. Hail your friends to tell them where to meet." Then the screen went blank.
"That was weird," I mumbled.
"He was probably just tired," Edaline reassured.
Next, I hailed Biana, Fitz, Dex, Tam, Linh, and Marella. They were VERY upset that they were woken up but once I told them where and when to meet, curiosity got the best of them and they tried to pry the story out of me. I was too tired to explain so I severed the connection.
That morning everyone was here at Havenfield. I repeated the story to everyone again. And just as I expected, everyone argued as to who should go to search for Amy.
"I should go because we can get stealth checked off the list with me. If Sophie enhances me, I can make two others turn invisible," Biana argued.
"I should go because--"
"We're Cognates!" everyone mocked.
"If I had a luster for everytime he says 'cognates' I would be broke," Dex joked.
"Man, you guys are really starting to sound like Keefe," I said. Everyone looked down. There was just silence.
"I really miss him," Biana whispered.
"Me too," I agreed. "But he made his decision. And it's time we make ours."
Grady cleared his throat. "Have you decided who will go yet?" Grady asked.
"Oh yeah... let's do that," I agree.
And then the arguing began again.
"EVERYBODY STOP," Mr. Forkle yelled. "Let's make this easy, shall we? Fitz will go with Sophie so he can give her mental boosts," Fitz pumped his fists. "Biana will go for stealth and Dex will go for the technology. Everybody got it?" Mr. Forkle asked.
Dex stumbled backwards into Marella.
"Sorry," Dex muttered his cheeks flushing red.
Dex looked so shocked. I couldn't really blame him. Dex was normally in the background with the technology since he was a Technopath. He was never "out on the field". He would always complain about how we don't think he exists. But I hope with this, he'll learn his true importance.
"So when are we leaving," Dex asked proudly.
"I was hoping we could leave tonight," I replied.
"That sounds good," Mr. Forkle confirmed.
"Excuse me, Miss Foster won't be going anywhere without me," Sandor, my bodyguard, said.
"And neither will Fitz," Grizel, Fitz's bodyguard said.
"Are you sure that's the only reason? Maybe something to do with not being able to bear being away from your boyfriend," Tam teased with a smirk. Grizel ignored him.
"Same thing with Dex," Lovise, Dex's bodyguard, agreed.
"As well as Biana. Actually especially Biana. She's a Vanisher. She really needs a bodyguard if she's going to turn invisible to sneak away." Woltzer added.
"Even in Everglen, you can never find me when I turn invisible," Biana argued.
And this time, it was Grady's turn to lose it.
"EVERYBODY SHUT UP!! INCLUDING YOU SANDOR," Grady added when Sandor started to open his mouth. "I will accompany them. I can Mesmer them into doing whatever they want. And we won't have to use an obscurer," Grady explained.
"Okay then it's settled. Dex, Sophie, Fitz, and Biana will leave this morning and Grady will accompany them," Mr. Forkle repeated.
"Let's go find my sister!" I exclaimed.
