He wasn't sure if this would work. Madeline was right, the smell of foreign blood was heavy along the lines of the Crescent Moon pack. There must have been countless fights to cause such a violent warning against crossing their lands. If those rogues were as brutal as his newly made friends had said, then it was probably them who caused the pack to act with such violence.

Alistair walked with them all the way to the territory lines. It was the best way to talk with them. They didn't want to shift, as that would make their scents stronger, and they had made enemies with those other rogues. He understood. Enemies were never a good thing to make, but it happened quite a lot, no matter how cautious you were. He had plenty of enemies.

"So," Jackie broke through the silence. "Is the pull getting stronger when you get closer to the territory?"

"Yes," he answered. He wasn't used to talking like a human. He wasn't really used to talking at all. He had been a beast for so long, it felt strange to walk on his two legs, rather than the four that he had always run on. "Thank you for the clothes," he looked at Herb. The man had let him wear a pair of shorts. They were worn, but it was better than being naked. "I forgot amidst trying to put them on to thank you."

"Don't worry about it," Herb said. He looked amused for a second. He couldn't figure out why. "I take it you haven't worn clothes in a while."

"It's been a while since I've been a human," he answered. "There's not much of a need when you're running all the time."

"What were you running from?"

"Nothing," he answered. "I was simply running."

"You didn't have a pack or anything you were running from?" he looked suspicious as he questioned.

"My pack had left me a long time ago," he answered. The memory was as fresh as snow after a storm. Yet he did not let it stay. He learned long ago that memories like that one was best in the past, where they belong. He needed to focus on the here and now.

"You didn't do anything to cause them leaving you?"

"I existed," he told the man. It seemed to shock them to hear him say that. But he wasn't telling them it to invoke sympathy out of them. He just answered the questions.

"You existed?" Jackie had a motherly look to her. It reminded him of good days with his own mother. He wished the best for her growing child in her stomach. "Why would they leave you just because you existed?"

"I don't know," he shrugged. "That is just what I heard from them."

"Was it because of what you look like?" Madeline asked.

"They never told me," he answered. "I just accepted that I was on my own since then."

"How long ago was that?"

"I don't know."

"You don't really know much, do you?" Herb asked. Even though he still seemed cautious whenever he was talking to his mate, he was much more comfortable around him otherwise. That must be why he was starting to ask so many questions.

"Not really," he looked up at the sky. It was dark, the perfect time to make their request. A request to speak with the Alpha or join a pack is always best done under the Moon Goddess' gaze. As long as you are careful in making sure you didn't come off as a threat to them. His scent was strong and his wolf was large, so many were intimidated by his size and saw him as a threat. But he had been successful in being allowed to pass through territories before with the Alpha's permission.

That pull was getting stronger. He could feel it with every step they took. He didn't know what it was still, but his instincts were telling him to keep walking towards this pack. He would determine whether it was within this pack or not after he met the Alpha. Alpha's were magical all on their own, and he admired them for it. To be able to lead and take on all the responsibility that it takes to be there for hundreds of people was a level of strength that Alistair didn't have.
