"That was easier than I thought it was going to be," Madeline sat down on one of the beds inside the cabin. "I think that request was the best thing we could have done."

"For us maybe," Herb told her. "The Alpha practically tore Alistair a new one."

"He's a protective leader," Alistair told him.

"I know that," Herb said. "But why would he be so hostile towards you? He wasn't nearly as bad around the rest of us."

"That's how they always react," he shrugged. "I come off as intimidating to most."

"But you're the kindest person we've met so far," Jackie said. She was resting her hand on her stomach as she sat down. "How can you be intimidating?"

"I can see it," Madeline nodded. "He's strong, and his wolf is pretty big considering most werewolf sizes. Not to mention you stand out a little bit."

"I suppose that answers it then," Alistair smiled. "I never knew the true reason, other than perhaps my strength. I simply knew that it happened."

"Well, you never told us you were a warrior in your old pack," she looked at him with curious eyes.

"I don't like thinking about those things," he looked out the window of their new home. At least he now had shelter from the sun. It gave him discomfort being away from the cool breeze that always helped to guide him, but he was used to discomfort. He had dealt with that his whole life.

"Were they bad times?" Herb asked. It shocked him just how curious everyone was about him. No one had ever asked him so many questions, other than of his appearance.

"Yes," he answered simply. Memories threatened to invade his thoughts, dampening his accomplishments with their black spindles of poison. Yes, this Alpha seemed to be guarded around him. But that did not mean that the world was ending. He could take another test from the Moon Goddess. He had gone through plenty of her tests as he journeyed.

It worried him that all of his tests wound up being more difficult than the last, but he had high hopes for this one. After this, he should be able to be at peace at last.

The pull was still there too. It was much stronger now that he was settled into the territory. He wished he could run towards it, like he was doing before. He wanted to find out what had pulled him so far, for so long. It had just started a season ago. The mystery of it was what kept him going. He needed to figure out what it was that pulled him so.

But it would have to wait. He didn't want to find the source of this pull right before getting slaughtered by this pack for breaking the rules that the Alpha set in place.

The next few days were simple enough. They each had a set time in which they would run around a part of the territory, making sure that no one passed through. Jackie was the only exception, and the doctor had been keen on visiting her every day to make sure that her child was healthy.

He met the other leaders of the pack through his patrols. Ed, the Gamma, would always be the one bringing them their meals. They had excellent food. He had forgotten how great human food was. One day, he was accompanied by the Delta, a man named Sam. He took a liking to Jackie and Herb. It was easy to see that he was a family man.

Tyler, the Beta, was the one who he patrolled with. He reminded him much of the Alpha. His face was always serious around him. And he only talked when he needed to. Alistair enjoyed that more than they probably thought. He liked the silence, for through it, he was able to hear the wind speak.

They patrolled at night. The darkness never frightened him. His mother had always told him that the Moon Goddess was watching over them at night. She would tell him that when he had woken up from a nightmare.
