The pack house was lit up that night. Music was blasting and people were dressed up, laughing and dancing. Nick was one of them. This was one of the first times he actually decided to dress up at these silly parties that they always held. They were nice, but he hated the fact that they always required him to put on some kind of suit.
But this night was different from all the other parties. This night was the last night he'd see Katy in a long time. They still had each other's phone numbers just in case they couldn't mind link with each other, so they could always use that. But she was already so far into the honeymoon phase that he doubted they were going to talk that much.
That Owen had, of course, been keeping her occupied the entire rest of the week. It was common for those who first mate to do something like that. They already marked each other, and he could tell that they were both still high off that feeling.
He was happy for her. He really was.
But, man, had the last few days been the most boring of his life.
He didn't have many people to talk to. They were all busy working on something. They were still working double time since the visitors hadn't left yet. So, he just worked longer. He was going to have to get used to it when he became the Head Chef anyway. He was so proud when Aldi told him that he was planning on making him his apprentice a few years back.
Working a little extra took some stress off the old chef anyway. They were all used to working like this. They've had visitors like this before, but it's never been for this long. Not with this many people. A visiting Alpha usually counted as five people in one, just because they demanded so much out of them. This time there were three visiting alpha's, counting Owen, and their respective mates.
This party wasn't just a farewell to Katy. It meant that they were finally going to be able to rest and get things back to normal in the pack house. Alpha William, Owen's father, had finally agreed on the territory lines. Which meant that all they needed to do was wait for the other packs to start pushing into the unmarked territory and cornering the rogues that plagued them.
He had heard that it might take a while to do. Maybe even months. The other two packs needed some time to get their warriors ready for attack and ready their defenses. The Harvest Moon pack had to make sure their cities wouldn't get affected by them moving their defenses further away. And the Blood Moon pack had to set their plans into action, as they were keen on strategizing to perfection.
But, all of this was a good sign that at least some things were moving. Max seemed a little worried about Owen taking leadership of the Blood Moon pack now that he had found his mate. He didn't think it would be that bad. Katy would snap at him if he tried to do anything stupid.
Katy. He already missed her. His heart hurt just thinking about the fact that he wasn't even going to be able to mind link with her anymore. More people had seemed to notice that he was upset, because so many of them would go up to him all throughout the day and ask if he was okay. Ed was another member that didn't really have much to do outside the meetings and other duties he had. His wife, Emily, was doing a bunch of internships now. He was hoping that it would be over soon. He could tell just how much Ed wished his mate were around more. But he hung out with him a lot in the meantime.
He walked into the main hall that the party was taking place in, feeling a little awkward. The only time he had actually wore a suit like this was at weddings he was forced to attend to. He liked to think it looked good on him. He just didn't like all the layers that suits had. It was so heavy. And the fact that it was the beginning of summer didn't help at all.
It was just a plain black suit, with a bowtie instead of the usual ties that everyone else wore.
"Wow, Nick," Barry, his brother, was the first to notice him. "I haven't seen you in that suit since my wedding."
