"Taehyung? You awake?"Taehyung groans as he regains consciousness. The light invading his eyes before he even opens them. He's in pain but he can't focus on that. He can't focus on anything but~
"Jeongguk?" He forces out. Opening his eyes and looking around the hospital room.
"Taehyung," Seokjin says, standing over the bed and looking down at the younger with worried eyes. "What happened? Why'd you do this?"
"I'm fine, hyung," Taehyung says weakly. "I n-need to see Jeongguk."
Seokjin sighs, shaking his head as tears fill his eyes. "Tae....there is no Jeongguk."
Taehyung is still disoriented, his mind is cloudy and all over the place. "What do you mean?"
Seokjin doesn't answer as he presses the call button for the doctor, wiping his tears with shaking hands. "I gotta call mom~"
"Wait, hyung. What do you mean?" Taehyung asks again, flinching slightly when he lifts his arm to stop Seokjin. "Where's Jeongguk?"
"Don't move your arms," Seokjin says through his tears. "Just relax."
The doctor walks in a few minutes later, offering Taehyung a warm smile as she checks his vitals.
"Are you feeling okay, honey? Are you in any pain?" She asks, flashing a light into Taehyung's eyes.
"No." He doesn't care if he was in pain. He wants to know where Jeongguk is.
"Can you step out for a second, Seokjin?" The doctor asks, moving to shut the door behind him. "I need to chat with Taehyung alone for a minute."
"He's asking about him," Seokjin says in a hushed voice as he steps out of the room.
"Okay. I'll take care of it," The doctor says reassuringly before shutting the door. She turns back to Taehyung with a sympathetic smile on her face. "You must be very confused. Can you tell me the last thing you remember?"
"I-I know what happened," Taehyung says. "It was stupid of me. I'm not usually like this. I was just...I was really upset."
"I understand," She says, nodding her head. "Have ever you had suicidal thoughts before now?"
"No."
"Have you recently become dependent on sleeping aids? Do you need them to sleep at night?"
Taehyung sighs. "No. Nothing like that."
The doctor tilts her head in confusion. "Do you feel comfortable telling me why you made such a drastic and irreversible decision?"
"I was really upset. But I'm not anymore," Taehyung says. "I feel horrible about all this."
"Who's Jeongguk, Taehyung?" The doctor asks with a concerned expression.
"Oh he's my...well, he was my boyfriend," Taehyung says. "We're kind of broken up now, I think."
"How'd you meet him?"
"It's a long story."
"We've got time."
Taehyung looks away for a moment as he thought back to when he first met Jeongguk. "I met him in the library. He was sitting in my seat and he offered me the one across from him."
"When was that?" The doctor asks.
"January 12th," He says. "We started talking and we got close. I found out he was in an abusive relationship with his boyfriend. I helped him when his boyfriend hurt him once."
"When did that happen?"
"A little while after we met," Taehyung says. "His boyfriend...he was obsessed with making him perfect. He controlled everything he did. But he couldn't control us. And I think Jeongguk loved that. Maybe that's what he loved all along...and not me."
The doctor nods, writing a few things down as she lets Taehyung continue.
"We started dating while he was still with his boyfriend. I know it was wrong of me, but I couldn't help the way I felt about him. I loved him. I still love him." Taehyung sighs. "We were happy when we were together. We were."
"When did you decide to end things with him?"
"I wasn't supposed to tell anyone we were together. But I told my brother and he flipped out." Taehyung explains. "He left and I haven't seen him since."
"Taehyung, what I'm about to say may be very upsetting and difficult for you to hear," The doctor warns before continuing. "There is no evidence that there was ever a Jeongguk in your life."
"What does that mean?" Taehyung asks in aggravation. Seokjin words replaying in his head. "We sat at the library together everyday."
"The librarian said that she saw you sitting alone at the library everyday since January," She says. "The note you left for Jeongguk, she read it and contacted Seokjin as quickly as she could~"
"No." Taehyung shakes his head in denial. "That's not possible."
"I know you're very confused~"
"You're telling me, what, he isn't real? Well that's impossible. Because I've seen him," Taehyung says. "I've seen him, I have pictures. Where's my phone. I can show you, I can."
"Taehyung~"
"My phone. Please."
The doctor stands and retrieves the device, handing it over despite the fact that he shouldn't have any access to it for at least 48 hours.
Taehyung unlocks the phone with shaking hands. Opening his photos and scrolling to the ones he took with Jeongguk at the beach. He's looked at them at least a hundred times since the brunette disappeared.
"No...this isn't right. This can't be right," Taehyung says, scrolling through the pictures. The pictures are there, but Jeongguk isn't where he should be. He isn't in them at all. "This can't be right."
"I'm sure this is all very upsetting~"
"He was here. I swear he was here." Taehyung swipes frantically through the photos. "Y-You don't understand, he was here."
"It's okay, Taehyung," The doctor says, standing and taking the cellphone out of his trembling hands. "We're going to get you the help you need."
Taehyung watches her with his eyes full of tears. A fearful look behind his eyes. This couldn't be happening. How could there be no Jeongguk?
After all the time they spent together. All the laughs they shared. The physical touches, the intimacy they used to share on a daily basis. How could all that not be real? How could Jeongguk not be real?
Those empty pictures from the beach already haunt him as he stares off into the distance.
There was no Jeongguk...
