When I was younger, my mother always used to tell me to never talk to strangers over the internet. Of course, being the ten year-old I was, I listened to her and didn’t talk to anyone I didn’t know.
But that was nine years ago, I didn’t really have any reason not to listen to her.
Nine years later, my friend, Claire, decided it would be fun to hook me up with some stranger. I, of course, discouraged the idea saying that he would be a pedophile or rapist. Claire was very persistant with the idea that I needed a boyfriend and that him being a pedophile was a very small chance.
“Adele, I promise nothing will go wrong.” Her chocolate colored hair bounced slightly as she pulled her white laptop from under her bed. It was a fairly new HP laptop that her dad had gotten her for her birthday last year.
“Addie, not Adele.” I corrected her. “How do you know that? There could be a maniac out there!” I exclaimed. She gave me a 'Are you serious' look and roller her eyes, Claire ignored my remark and opened up a dating website that's always announced on television commercials.
“Look,” She pointed with her index finger to the computer screen. “It’s just a simple questionnaire, it’s not going to bite.” I skimmed through the questions. They were pretty simple. It just asked for simple things like favorite color, food and of the sorts. “Come on, it’ll be fun.”
It did sound pretty good, and maybe he wouldn't be a demented physco.
“I hate you…” I glared at her.
“I love you.” She giggled. “Alright, the first question is…What’s your name?” I gave her a sarcastic look “Adele Ryan.” She sounded it out as she typed it. “Age…nineteen.” After we finished the trivial questions, Claire attached a picture of me from our graduation party. “Finally, the interesting parts! What’s your favorite color.” Claire giggling slightly, causing the laptop that sat on her to jostle.
“Orange.” I said bluntly. The question weren't really interesting. It was pretty lame if asked me.
“Straight, homosexual, or bisexual?” Claire stared intently at the screen. She was such a computer wizard.
“Straight.”
“Ideal date?”
“Doesn’t really matter.” I shrugged my shoulders. Dates weren’t really my forte. I'd be happy wherever he'd take me.
As we went through the never ending silly questions, I answered honestly. Just because I didn't want to be matched up with someone I couldn't stand.
“Alright, here are the results.” Only one popped up. “Huh, that’s weird... I’m pretty sure there should be more than one result.” Claire scrolled up and down the screen in search of more, but there was none.
I glanced at the small picture of him that was attached to his profile. His hair was dark raven black against his pale complexion, and his clear blue eyes displayed an innocent look. In a way, he looked so familiar, yet so different.
“He’s hot!” Claire exclaims, pulling open his profile.
“I know, huh!” I pull the laptop off her lap and skim through his profile.
