“This isn’t my mom… It can’t be…” I say through clenched teeth. A woman, who resembles my mother, is lying on a hospital bed. Cuts, bruises and dried blood stained her flawless body.

“It is.” The nurse tells me. “She has a very slight chance of surviving.”

“What happened?” Rokkit asks the doctor who stands next to the nurse. He rubs comforting circle on my back as springs sprung into my eyes.

“The plane they were in a few days ago crashed. Only a few survived.” The doctor glowers at my mom’s empty shell of a body.

“What about my dad.” This can’t be happening. My mom can’t die, she hasn’t done anything wrong.

The doctor frowns and shakes his head.

“No, no, no! He can’t be dead!” I yell. “You are lying! My parents can’t die!” It can’t be; this has to be some sick joke.

“Adele, calm down. Everything is going to be alright.” Rokkit secures his arms around my waist.

“How can you say that? My parents are dead!” I try to break away from his grip, but it’s futile.

“I promise you, everything is going to be fine.” He presses his lips against my cheek, and slowly, I begin to relax in his arms.

“I’ll leave you two alone for a while.”

We nod and the nurse and doctor walk out. Rokkit wipes away the stray tears that stain my face. The steady beat on the monitor of my mom’s heartbeat fill the room with an eerie silence.

“She’s going to die…” I sniffle into his chest.

“No she’s not. It’s all going to be fine.”

“That’s what you say. She’s in a critical condition; she can die at any minute.” I sit on his lap as he softens my hair. “What am I going to tell Max?”

“He’s going to find out sooner or later, its best you tell him now.”

“I can’t.” I sob.

“I’ll tell him, then.” Rokkit slowly pulls me off of him and onto a different chair in the room. “I’ll be right back.”

A few minutes later, Rokkit makes his way back with Max. Max didn’t show many type of emotion on his childlike features. He displays a stone cold look that doesn’t seem to fit his persona.

We sit in silence in the room for the remainder of the night, reflecting on today’s events.

*

Two weeks have gone by, and all I’ve done is lay by the phone, awaiting the phone call from the hospital, telling me my mom is dead. She hasn’t gotten better or worsened yet, but we all know the day is nearing when her heart just decides to give in.

My phone rings. It knocks the wind out of me until I see it’s just Rokkit.

“Hello?” I ask.

“Baby Doll, open the door. I’ve been knocking for five consecutive minutes.” I can hear the slight laugh in his tone of voice.

“Oh, I’m sorry Rokkit.” I mumble, tossing the phone to the side and getting up to open the door.

“I brought you something.” He pulls out a dozen roses from his back.

“Rokkit, you didn’t have to.” I frown, taking the roses from his hands.

“But I wanted to.” He steps inside my house without warning and closes the door. “Say, where’s Max?”

“It’s a school day.” I state simply.

“Have you been getting any sleep lately? You have deep bags under your eyes.” Rokkit contemplates my weary appearance.

“How if at any given moment my life can go down the drain.” The tears had stopped. I wasn’t crying anymore. Max, on the other hand, hasn’t said a word since dad’s funeral. He is slowly becoming distant and violent. He seems to be forgetting that he still has me. “Even so, why are you here?”

Rokkit paces back and forth in the living as I sit on the couch with a bottle of coke in my hand. It’s all I’ve been drinking since the night at the hospital.

“Baby Doll, it’s been two weeks since I’ve been in LA and…” He chews on his lower lip and stops moving.

“And…” I drag on.

“And…” He sighs and takes a seat next to me. “It’s time I go back to New York. I came to say goodbye.”

This is it; he’s going to leave me. I sigh and lean back on the couch, preparing for the worst.

“I don’t know when I’ll be back.” He pauses for a split second and reaches into his back pocket and pulls out an envelope. “I’ve paid off your mom’s hospital bill. There’s no need to worry about that. This,” He pulls my hand out and stuff the envelope in my hand. “Is enough money to last you until I come back.”

“Rokkit, I can’t take this!” I yell, handing him the wadded up money back.

“Please, Adele, take it.” He gives me a pleading look and I take it guiltily. “It’s my entire share of my signing bonus.”

“Rokkit…” I plead.

“Adele, you need it. Now go upstairs and get some sleep. You look like the living dead.” Rokkit comments pushing me up the stairs.

“I’ll see you soon?” I ask him, hugging him once more as I sit on my bed.

“I don’t know, Baby, but I’ll web chat with you tomorrow at five like always.” His warm smile makes me feel loved and cared for.

“Love you…” I mumble, cuddling up with my pillow. It feels good to be back in my warm bed. I had it abandon for the longest time.

“Love you too.” He whispers, getting himself off my bed and walking out.

After he left, I knew everything was going to be fine. I was going to be fine, Max was going to be fine, and most importantly, my mother was going to live.

At least I hope.
