“So how are you doing, Doll.” Rokkit grins over the computer screen.
“Fine, I guess.” I mumble, stuffing a cherry into my mouth. It’s been a few weeks since my last visit to the hospital. They call often to keep me up to date on my mother’s condition. She started responding to the treatment, which is very good! The doctors thought she wouldn’t have survived, but I’m glad she’s doing a whole lot better.
“How’s Max?” Every time we web chat, Max is the first thing he asks about. Max has really grown on him. They’ve developed a ‘big brother’ kind of relationship.
“Not so good. He just got kicked out of the private school he attended and he’s locking himself in his room way too much. I’m beginning to suspect something is terribly wrong.” A sinking feeling in my stomach began to occur. Just the thought of something happening to Max sends my heart racing.
“I want to go visit you so bad, but I’m in the middle of recording a new song.” His eyes reflect a sad and guilty expression.
Without thinking, I call Max into the room. I glower at him. His appearance has changed dramatically. His once blonde hair was now a dark brown color and streaked with platinum blonde highlights. His new ‘friends’ had done it to him.
“What do you want?” He asks me coldly. Max’s expression is rather vague. His blue eyes don’t convey anything other than a blank stare and his facial features don’t tell me anything either.
“Don’t you want to talk to Rokkit?” I ask sweetly. He glared at me for a second before coming over to me and shoving me off my bed and out of my room. I hear the silent click of the lock and grin. Max is just a little bit lost. Maybe in a few weeks, he’ll be better.
I stand outside my door for a couple of minutes before deciding to go downstairs and check my cellphone messages. I haven’t really used my cellphone often since most of the hospital calls were to the house phone and Rokkit and I talked online the majority of the time.
I grab my phone off the couch and make my way to the kitchen. I lean against the island as I scroll through the texts. Many of them are from Claire, some from Adam. You remember him right? Adam, you know, the babysitter, the one who watches over my brother? Yeah, thought you did. He often messages me to remind me that he comes on such days.
As I continue to look through my messages, I land on one by Josh. Normally, when he messages me, it is to remind of future dates they might come or just to keep me up with stuff about their band that Rokkit doesn’t mention to me. Oddly enough, I felt like this message was different.
The message starts off like every other one he has sent me.
“Hey Addie, how’ve you been?” His voice is nervous, almost like he is being held at gunpoint to convey a hidden message to me. “I haven’t seen you in ages!” He chuckles nervously and a weird static is heard from the other side. “Have… heard…gossip? Don’t….believe!” The voice message abruptly ends.
I pull the phone from my ear and stare at the screen. He had abruptly hung up there. Weird, I think.
Gossip? I don’t normally keep up with that useless kind of chatter, but it must important if Josh has to message me about it.
Since Max is still upstairs, I decide to take the long walk to the coffee shop since Starr feeds on celebrity gossip. After an hour and a half, I manage to arrive at the bustling coffee shop. Hudson is managing the counter which means Starr is probably slacking off in the back.
“Hudson, where is Starr?” I ask him, leaning about the long countertop. He motions to the back door with his left hand. “Thanks.” I mumble before hopping over the counter. I open the creaky brown door to find Starr huddled next to her magazine in one hand, and a coffee mug in another.
“Hey Addie,” Starr chirped. “Did you hear?”
“That’s exactly what I’m here to ask you. Have I heard what?” I shrug my shoulders and slump on the couch next to her.
She gasps overdramatically, placing her petite hand over her pink, plump lips.
“You haven’t heard? It’s been all over teen gossip sites!”
“I don’t go online that often.” That’s a total lie. I’m on every day, talking to Rokkit.
She gives me an iffy look but continues.
“Well…” She mumbles, touching her magazine carefully. “I guess this should explain it.” She slides the brightly colored magazine to me. Only the usual kinds of gossip are on it. Such and such broke up… (Insert some girl’s name here) just had a baby….Some girl moved to Paris…
You get my drift.
“I don’t get it…” I mumble. She groans and takes my finger and points to a specific picture. I only stare at it, trying to comprehend what I’m seeing.
“This isn’t real is it?” I ask her. I can feel the crystal clear tears rolling down my cheeks.
“I hope it isn’t but she has said it herself.” Her eyes conveyed such a sad look.
“I don’t know what to say.” My voice begins to crack at the very end. A deep pressure is suddenly put on my heart, making it weigh down and cause a sinking feeling.
“You don’t have to say anything.” She whispers. Tension suddenly fills the room when Hudson walks in on us.
“What are you guys crying about?” He doesn’t seem to show to least bit of sympathy towards me.
“Rokkit is cheating on Addie.”
