CHAPTER 19

Alex sat at his desk staring at his calendar. He really couldn’t believe that Faith was still coming. What else that he couldn’t believe is that he still haven’t told Melissa about it. He would have to tell her when he got home tonight. However, the question of telling when it’ll just go to the same thing during an argument haunted his mind.

       Yelling.

       Proving points.

       More Yelling.

       Bring up Faith.

       Baby starts crying.

       Melissa walks off pissed.

If Alex wasn’t so used to the lawyer life, he would have already gone insane with dealing with Melissa.

       5:40 PM

Alex looked at his phone and considered calling Faith but wasn’t sure if she was still at work or not.

His hands slid over his phone dialing Faith’s number whom he simply put as Dee short for Nadia knowing Melissa searches through his phone at times whenever he accidently slips up leaving around her.

The phone rang twice before he heard a shuffling movement before a soft voice answered.

       “Faith?”

       “Alex? Why are you calling?”

       “Still at work?”

“No, I’m at home cooking. What’s wrong?”

       “Nothing. Just wanted to talk.”

       “About…?”

Alex remained quiet for a moment before responding. “Everything.”

More shuffling sounds. “Damn, let me sit down.”

Alex lightheartedly laughed and leaned back in his chair. “Don’t break a back, old lady.”

“Old Lady? Last time I checked you were 6 months older than me? You defiantly can’t talk!”

       “So we got jokes?”

“Maybe,” Faith laughed. “So, what does everything consist of?”

“The kids, marriage, life. Pretty much any topic brought up.”

“Well let’s start off with kids. Natasha made an excellent score on the SATs last week.”

“Oh really? She got the smartness from me,” Alex joked. “And Nathanial?”

“Eh…I wish he would apply himself more towards everything else besides that damn game system.”

       “The one that you bought.”

       “With MY money.”

“Speaking of…How’s that coming along with you?”

“What are you saying? Keep in mind I still get my cut and I’m Assistant Manager of Casanova’s which, might I add, has some damn good pay.”

       “I’m sorry, I was just curious because, I mean…”

       “What?”

“You never came after me for child support.”

Faith softly chuckled. “While you playing, Lana tried to get me to. Twice! But on a serious note, I have no need to.”

“What black woman don’t want her free money?” Alex laughed.

“The same one who doesn’t need financial help or a man.”

       “I’ve heard that before…”

       “Shut up, Alex,” Faith laughed.

“No really, why not? I mean, it wouldn’t be a problem for me.”

“I’m pretty sure Alex, but it’s the fact that I would just be a hassle dealing with that…Plus, I already filed my taxes. You keep talking like you want me to file for child support.”

“You’re missing the point Faith. I want to be a part of the twin’s life…even if I’m just paying for their survival.”

       “You are a part-“

“How? I mean, if anything, my relationship with my only son isn’t how my vision was years ago.”

“Nathanial isn’t used to having a male counterpart. It’s always been me and Natasha around except the fact of his Grandma.”

It got quiet on the line before Faith shuffled around again. “Faith…”

       “Yes?”

“Are you dealing with me only because of the twins?”

       “Yes and no.”

       “What you mean?”

“Yes because I don’t want them seeing us pissed off at each other for whatever reason.”

       “And your no?”

       “Personal reasons.”

       “Like…?”

“You.” Alex paused and sat up in his chair. “I can’t take the thought of not having you a part of my life. Not just for the kids’ sake, but the fact I still enjoy your company…even when we’re arguing over whatever crap.”

“Well you think I don’t feel the same way? Like I said, I want to be there for Nathanial and Natasha but you too. I haven’t met anyone like you who I can talk to casually and vent about anything…even you.”

       “Me? Well then.”

       “Yeah…”

       “Hey, I got to-”

       “Oh I understand-”

       “No, it’s just-”

       “I’m late…Uh…Can I call tomorrow?”

       “Sure.”

       “Then it’s a da-I mean…bye.”

Alex quickly hung up the phone and looked at the clock. It was almost 7 o clock and he was planning on being home 15 minutes from now.

       Wasn’t going to happen.
