CHAPTER 16

Adrian sat on the couch asleep but woke up at the sound of the alarm. It was eventually cutoff, but Adrian had no idea who was coming in this late at night.

“Dad?” A voice answered around the corner.

“Dashawn? Why you home? Coming home late, that is.”

“Just cause,” Dashawn lied, slowly walking towards a couch.

“Guess you wasn’t staying at your homeboy’s”

“His sister probably wouldn’t like that.”

       “What you mean?”

“She kicked me…down low,” he complained sitting down in the dark, the T.V. the only thing for a light source.

Adrian held back a smile. “Why? You stole her purse? Called her fat? Ugly?” Adrian joked.

“No…She freaked out…if you know what I mean.”

       “Well, no means no, Dashawn.”

He rolled his eyes. “That’s what she said…now that I think about it, if she tells Nathanial, he might try to find my ass.”

       Adrian’s smile quickly faded. “Nathanial?”

“Yeah. Homeboy at the get together awhile back.”

       “Twin sister?”

Dashawn tried to sit up. “Yeah…Why? You remember them?”

“Damn…” Adrian sighed. “Dashawn, you didn’t sleep with Natasha, did you?”

       “Tried…”

“Son, you…you don’t know, do you?”

       “What?”

“Those are your cousins…Those are Alex’s older kids.”

Dashawn tried to stand up but denied the thought. “You serious? Damn! Man…just…ughh!”

       “Dashawn…” Adrian started.

“Pops, I KISSED my cousin. I DATED my cousin. I have done and said some things TO MY COUSIN that shouldn’t be said TO A COUSIN! Bro…maine!”

“Where were you?” Melissa questioned as Alex walked through the door.

Alex groaned and stripped off his sweater. “I don’t feel like arguing, Melissa.”

Melissa stepped in front of him before he could go up the stairs. “What the hell, Alex? We don’t have a nanny. I’ve been with the baby since this morning. You said you would be home at 7!”

Alex’s vision was slightly dazed. “Mel-”

“You were at Faith’s house, huh?” Melissa got closer to Alex. “Have you been drinking? Did she drug you?”

Alex slapped away her hand. “I’m going check on Janet.”

“No you are not. You’re drunk!”

“Move.” Alex glared deep in Melissa’s eyes looking past the hazel color and to her personality.

       “And if I don’t?”

He shook his head and walked towards the kitchen to fix a glass of wine. Melissa followed closely behind scolding him. “Don’t you think you’ve had enough?”

“I’m getting enough of your mouth,” Alex scowled taking a sip of wine.

“Alex Wolfe, if you think I’m going to put up with your bullshit, you have another thing coming! I already told you our plans-”

       “Your plans.”

       “What?”

Alex turned around and stared hard at Melissa. “What did you find out? Huh? Nathanial told me about the required DNA test.”

Melissa lightly touched Alex’s shoulder with concern. “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you, but I don’t trust Faith. She deceived you, remember?”

“It’s in the past. Things change. People change,” Alex calmly said thinking of Faith’s smiling face.

“Some things aren’t forgivable. You can’t just forget that she-“

“She what?” Alex yelled slamming his glass on the island counter. “That she cheated on me with Adrian? That she had my children and I didn’t know for 16 years? Tell me something I don’t fucking know, Melissa! I’m tired of hearing it from everyone! The press, the family, and damn sure you! Just leave it in the fucking past!”

Before Melissa could make a response, Janet was crying loudly upstairs. Melissa gave Alex a cold look. “Don’t come upstairs until you’ve calmed down. I’m going get our daughter.”

Alex watched Melissa walk upstairs and released a loud sigh. This whole thing was ridiculous.
