Entry in Wattpadpoetry 2017 July Is Shining contest - 3rd place

Once upon a summer's day

too many years ago to say

with perfect clarity

I saw my future

She was Delphinium, in my eye

birth flower of July

bathed in golden sunlight

such a picture

I could but stand there and admire

in the hope I could acquire

the ardent, open heart

for which it's known

She sent a glance in my direction

just a cursory inspection

an idle contemplation

with no impression shown

Still, her image was hypnotic

on the boundary of erotic

the spell she cast

gripped me in its thrall

I could only stand and stare

while she, completely unaware,

I was imprisoned

and at her beck and call

She rose with grace and strolled away

before I had a chance to say

the words locked in confusion

on my tongue

And with aching heart did swallow

lacking nerve enough to follow

the moment then was lost

my head just hung

I reflected on how funny

a day that started out so sunny

could deteriorate so quickly

in a cloud

I thought of maybe being bolder

a phrase I could have told her

perhaps a sonnet

I might have spake aloud

Then once again my hopes took flight

as I caught her in my sight

where she had stopped

to lean against a tree

With the July sun beaming down

she wore her aura like a crown

and she smiled

yes! she smiled at me

So this sunny summer's day

really did turn out okay

my Delphinium of July

had breached my heart

And from July until September

this summer I'll remember

that brilliant, golden smile

even though we are apart
