Narrator's POV

Jack and Annette stood side by side at the entrance of the palace of the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, Ahmed III. The Imperial New Palace was built on one of the highest points, close to the sea. Just looking out the window, you can see Golden Horn and where the Bosphorus Strait meets the Marmara Sea. The interior of the palace is asymmetric, unique, and irregular. There were low buildings that were built around courtyards, and had secret passageways that Annette wanted to explore. It had Ottoman architecture styles, lavishly decorated with painted tiles, stained-glass windows, and shutters with mother-of-pearl and ivory inlay.

Jack glanced around at the beautiful and captivating palace before gazing down at Annette, who was peering down at her sea boots. With all the beauty of the building, he found her the most enchanting. To her, he would give the world. Jack looked back up and casually nudged her with his elbow. When she looked up at him, he pretended like he didn't do anything. He looked up and around at the palace, whistling.

Annette sensed this, and did the same back to him. Jack stifled his chuckling that echoed through the room, and Annette saw him prepare himself to nudge her back. She stepped out of the way just in time, and Jack leaned too far and nearly fell.

Annette started laughing as Jack scrambled up to his feet and said, "oi." He pointed at Annette and said, "not funny."

"What are you going to do about it?" She teased.

Jack lunged toward her, and they started wrestling around, grunting like children. They had no supervision, so they could do anything they wanted but leave.

Annette wrapped herself behind Jack and snaked her arm around his neck and pinned him towards her in a choke hold. Jack's eyes bulged and he tried to pull at her elbow to loosen her grip.

One of the Sultan's guards came over to tell them that the Sultan was almost ready for them. His voice trailed off in confusion when he saw them, and Jack and Annette both froze in their positions. Annette nodded to the guard that she understood his message. He backed away in confusion, and Annette was distracted just long enough for Jack's eyes to drift closed and she felt his resistance cease. Jack passed out from lack of blood flow to his brain.

Annette peered over Jack's shoulder to see his face, quickly realizing that he was out cold. She gasped and said, "oh, merde. Oh, merde, Jack!"

She tried to carefully set him down on the floor, but he slipped out of her grasp and he fell to his knees, then flat on his face. The harsh smack echoed around the room. Annette felt terrible and said, "oh, merde. Come on. Breathe."

Jack still wasn't moving, so she stood beside his body and put her hands on his back, pressing up and down quickly and gently to get air back into his lungs. Jack's eyes opened again and she felt relieved that she didn't accidentally kill him. "Oh, good. You're okay? Waking up now?"
