Samuel Bellamy was very new to piracy, after spending years as a privateer to the British kingdom. He took his daughter as he joined Captain Benjamin Hornigold on the Marianne, where Blackbeard was the first-mate. Maria would come across Blackbeard many years later on Queen Anne's Revenge, in search for the Fountain of Youth in 1751. Despite sailing with him for many months, neither pirates recognized each other when they reacquainted.

Young Annette, then known as Maria Bellamy, was gradually accepted on the ship with her father. It took a few months, but the crew warmed up to her and appreciated her presence. They often ate with her and played with her when they weren't working. She was a beam of light and hope on the smelly, slimy English ship.

One day, as Samuel was having a meeting with his Captain, Captain Hornigold, Maria was out on deck with the rest of the crew. Samuel trusted each man with his daughter, because the crew was one big family. Samuel did not have any surviving family in England to take care of Maria since her mother died, so he was forced to take her along on his dangerous adventures.

He and Hornigold walked out to the helm to look down to the impressive deck. Each time he sees his daughter, he is reminded of his late wife and the frigid winter air of that night. He imagined that she would grow up to look like her mother, beautiful and Both foul and fair, winter had proved to have a magic that cannot be controlled. Beautiful, powerful, and dangerous were all descriptions of Maria's future, foreshadowed by the night she was born. His eyes drifted and he saw a sharp weapon in the hands of his six-year old daughter.

"Men! What is in my daughters hands?!" Samuel bellowed. His ears grew red with rage, and his hands clasped together behind his back. He had tried to keep her away from weapons, because she was so young and he didn't want her to hurt herself on accident. He also intended to raise her properly, and he believed that girls should not be introduced to such violent objects.

"It's made of wood," one of the crew members said, brushing him off.

Samuel squinted at the sword, clenching his strong jaw and realized that it was indeed made out of wood. Although it wasn't something he instantly approved of, he let out a soft sigh of relief. He watched closely at the crew using their break time to teach young Maria how to sword fight.

Hornigold took a step closer to Samuel, and they both watched the young girl intently as her smile brightened up the entire ship. The tough hearts of the men melted when they played with the adorable child, finding her desire to learn how to sword fight to be endearing and humorous. Anyone could tell that she was having a lot of fun, although it wasn't conventional.

He leaned toward Samuel and said in a deep voice, "she's going to be a great pirate someday."

Samuel allowed himself to smile. He was a visually impressive man: tall, lean, strong, weathered, and tan. He had long dark hair that was tied back with ribbons. His tough exterior disguised his youth, since he was only in his mid-twenties. His clothes reflect his triumphs, making him look more like a wealthy merchant than a rugged sailor. He was a veteran of transatlantic trade routes, and the War with Spain. He lifted his chin up proudly and he agreed, "indeed."
