1716

It was late 1716 when Annette first met Captain Jack Sparrow. This was before she was Annette, this was when she was Maria Elizabeth Bellamy. The daughter of Captain Samuel Bellamy. It was that summer where the crew of the Marianne became annoyed with Hornigold's unwillingness to attack ships from England. He was disposed as captain and Samuel was voted by the crew to take his place.

This was right after Jack made his deal with Davy Jones to resurrect the Black Pearl from the depths and be granted thirteen years with her in exchange for serving 100 years on the Flying Dutchman. Jack figured that he had thirteen years to get out of his debt, and he would worry about it later.

Captain Samuel was standing at the helm of his ship when he had one hand on the shoulder of his daughter, and the other held a spyglass. He was wearing an exotic mix of fine clothes taken from his earlier victims, and he was bristling with weapons. Four jeweling pistols were strapped to his chest. He was waiting for his crew to dock the ship properly so they could go to port.

"See that man." Samuel pointed to a pirate who was swaggering down the boardwalk. "He's quite mad."

Maria was just five years old at the time, unaware of the pirate her father was going to warn her about. But, once they reached the deck, Captain Jack Sparrow waltzed over to greet them himself. He had a newfound confidence after becoming Captain, but he was already very confident in himself.

"Ah, Captain Bellamy, we meet again," Jack greeted.

"Hello, Captain Sparrow. How does it feel to be called Captain?" Samuel asked.

Jack was a fairly new captain, having earned the title at a young age, just like Samuel. He was still learning and growing. Samuel had no fear when it came to attacking ships, one famous example was when he persuaded his entire crew to attack another ship completely in the nude, and he opted for non-violent tactics that provoked fear. Jack favored this to violence, and saw Bellamy as a mentor.

"It's sensational," Jack said, basking in the title.

"How is the Pearl treating you?" Samuel asked.

"She's a diamond, mate," Jack said, and turned around to admire his ship. "A beautiful ship."

"Rumor has it that she sunk," Samuel mentioned.

"Lies," Jack snapped.

"Right then... well, I don't believe you have met me daughter, Maria," Samuel said, pulling his daughter in front of him and placed the palms of his hands on her thin shoulders proudly.

Jack turned back to her and snarled his lip at the sight of a child. It does not matter how young Jack Sparrow is... he does not like children. Maria stuck her hand out to him and Jack widened his eyes and gently pinched her finger and shook it.

"How do you do?" He asked cynically.

"I'm fine," Maria said in a small voice.

"Captain!" Barbossa, Jack's first-mate, shouted at Jack from the Pearl, "we must make sail!"

"Thank you, Barbossa!" Jack shouted up at him. He turned to the Bellamy's and took his hat off. "Always a pleasure seeing you, Captain Bellamy. Perhaps we shall schedule a drink, eh?"

"Looking forward to it," Samuel nodded.

Jack set his hat back on his head with a grunt. He looked down at Maria while swaying in place and spat, "child."

"Pirate," she said back with the same attitude.

Jack grunted with a nod and scampered up to his ship, yelling indistinctively at Barbossa to start making sail.

Samuel leaned down to his daughter and said, "if you ever see that man again... walk the other way."

"Aye, aye, father," Maria giggled.

"That's me girl—" he kissed her cheek— "now come on, we have a delivery to make."

As Maria was walking down the dock with her father, she couldn't help but turn around to see Jack. He was not like any pirate she had ever seen. He was young, and full of ambition. Of course, she was young herself. She had no idea the influence he would make on her life.

This exchange was nothing more than a few words, so even if Maria had not suffered amnesia, she would more than likely not have remembered her brief encounter with Captain Jack Sparrow.
