Eleven years before the events of Curse of the Black PearlThe day of the ship wreck was the worst day of Annette Levasseur's life... if she could remember it. It was also the day that Maria Bellamy died. This was when Annette's name was Maria Elizabeth Bellamy, the daughter of Captain Samuel Bellamy.
Seven-year-old Maria was hiding under the deck with one of the youngest cabin boys, ten-year-old John King, put there by her father in great effort to protect her from harm due to the incoming storm. The arctic storm was brought down from Canada, making it one of the worst storms to ever hit the cape. John was shaking with fear, and it wasn't long ago where he joined Bellamy's crew with a yearning for adventure and freedom. He didn't realize just how dangerous the sea can be.
It was all hands on deck as they were fighting against a violent storm in Cape Cod. Instead of steering out to sea, Bellamy chose to stay close to land, trying to find a place to make port in Cape Cod. The crew was composed of the the survivors from two shipwrecks that Bellamy saved in January of that year, that were half veteran pirates and half newly liberated slaves that Bellamy welcomed to his crew. Olivier Levasseur's time on the ship was short lived, he took his crew of Frenchmen and left Bellamy just five months earlier.
The rain blocked any light that could have come from the stars or the overhead moon, submerging the ship into darkness. The ship swayed back and forth violently, making the children feel sick. She smoothed out her full blue skirt of her dress, and tried not to anxiously play with her brown curls as the cabin boy tried to distract her from the men's screams above the ship. The only thing that provided her comfort was holding the ruby ring in her hand, as it stayed connected to the leather string around her neck.
It was just two months after Captain Samuel Bellamy captured the Whydah Gally. True to his reputation of generosity, he traded his previous ship, Sultana, for it. They were met with an unforgiving sea. Fierce and menacing waves pummeled the vessel crashed onto the deck, knocking pirates off their feet, lightning lit up the sky, and had the heaviest rainfall they have ever sailed through.
The crew was doing their best to steer the ship against the strong current. Crew on the forecastle were struggling with the rigging, and the helmsman was fighting with the wheel. Another massive wave crashed down onto the deck, where some of the crew were washed overboard into the watery abyss. The 300-ton titan, which was carrying one of the greatest pirate treasures ever accumulated, was being tossed around like a mere toy in the stormy weather. Water started pooling into the berth deck, which frightened Maria and the cabin boy. Maria was terrified, and all she wanted was to be in the loving presence of her dad for their last moments. She raced up the steps to the main deck, where she saw the catastrophic ending of her father and crew.
One crew member heard the sounds of the waves hitting the shore, and he shouted, "breaker! Breaker!" But it was too late.
The ship was being driven towards the surf, where jagged rocks lay beneath. The terrified sailors were holding onto whatever they could for dear life. Flashes of lightning illuminated the vertical sheets of rock that was the cliffs of Cape Cod in the distance.
