"So girls." Fabiola sighs proudly. "This..." She indicates with her hand to a little yellow Toyota Yaris. An older model and second hand, ofcourse, because that were what her parents could afford with upcoming college fees and expenses. But, never the less, Fabiola couldnt of wanted more. Not all parents could afford to buy their kids a car, and she were just fortunate she could be one of lucky ones that could enjoy the freedom that came with owning her own car. Ofcourse, she also knew there were consequences that carried on of being the only friend with a car... she would therefore most likely to become the designated 'uber.' She knows it and can already feel it, feeling their eyes on her... eager to pop out a question... like 'could you drive me home?' or 'Could you drop us off at the mall?' sort of questions. Her little car sits there in front of her in the school parking lot as she stands there admiring it. "This guys... this is my brand new car." She beams, appreciating it's perfect glint in the sun after her and her dad had freshly coated it with a fresh new polish and waxing the previous day. She absolutely cherishes her little car, if you could tell by the wide grin that spreads over her face as she stands there adoring it. Devi, on the other hand... seems mildly impressed... scrunching up her face as she glances it. A look comes across her face, as though she had just sucked on a lemon.
"Why is it so yellow?" Devi questions alittle mockingly, Fab cant help but tell, and there is a slight disappointment in her tone, breaking Fabiola's focus. Slowly crossing her arms, she turns her gaze to Devi, a look of disbelief over her face.
"What's wrong with yellow, Devi?" She gasps, eyes narrowed on her, and feeling as though her heart just sank alittle.
"I don't know... maybe it's just got that 'gaint banana' type vibe to it." Devi huffs a laugh to herself, but immediately does stop when her gaze falls back on Fab's irritated frown.
"No it doesn't." She scoffs. "At least I have a car. And you..." she points to her with a teasing smile. "You will never get behind the wheel of this baby... you know? After what you did to Ben's poor Tesla."
Devi looks up at her appalled.
"That was an accident." She cries.
"Hmm." Fab darts her eyes up and down on her, critically. "That's how car crashes usually happen. I can't believe we've been criticing Ben's driving skills this entire time." She scoffs, a taunting smile forming on her face. Devi purses her lips, obviously to irritated to reply. She cant do that to her... Fab obviously doesnt know what she's talking about... obviously doesnt even know the entire story, she manages to convinces herself. Turning back to Devi, Fab looks at her slightly confused. "And can someone please explain what the heck happened to Ben's arm? I feel Ive missed alot... you know... since I were gone."
Devi knows she needs to get in before El, before she could distort her story, before she could make Devi look worse. But, ofcourse, El is to quick and beats her to it anyway, leaving Devi feeling somewhat defeated. El excitedly emerges from behind Devi, wraps her arms around her shoulders, pulling her in, and more than eagerly jumps in on the opportunity to share Devi's story for her.
"I know everything..." She taunts, bobbing excitedly on her feet. "Devi explained it all to me... and exactly as it happened."
Devi shoots her a cringe. She were definitely eager to share this bit of gossip about her and Ben... and right in front of her too. And Fab looks slightly offended that El knows 'everything' and she didnt. This was mostly because Fab had been on a robotics club camp for almost two weeks and had returned only two days ago... and coming home... to her new amazing suprise from her parents... her little car.
"Ben stayed over at her place. For the first time. Overnight." El excitedly giggles, whilst Devi rolls her eyes at her eagerness to tell her story. Fab turns to Devi with complete shock. Her jaw literally drops.
"Im... wait... but your mum! Your mum would never let Ben stay overnight! She doesn't even let him in your room!" She gasps. "I mean I know she knows you guys are... you know... already. But not in your house...I thought-"
"Thats the thing Fab! Devi's mum didnt even know he were even there!" El continues, while a very annoyed Devi tries to interrupt.
"Hello, I'm here-"
"Which also becomes the very reason he climbed out her window in a hurry at six am in the morning." El laughs. Fab's shocked expression morphs to humor.
"What?! But did she catch them?!"
Devi groans, feeling as though she were being neglected by the two.
"Ben had then climbed out her window before she could open the door. But! He tried escaping... hurtling himself into a close by tree, and... landing the ground pretty badly. Thereby fracturing his humerus."
Fab gasps again, then shakes her head.
"Wow... he thinks his James Bond." She mocks, then begins to laugh with El. Devi growls in annoyance. She's had enough!
"Ok, can we just go back to admiring Fab's car?! I forgot to mention how much I adore your lovely little yellow minion car."
"Oow Devi... you and Ben got into some mischief." Fab laughs.
"How do you both know we didn't just fall asleep watching Netflix or something." She replies, as she steps forward to scoop up her bag off the ground, just as her eyes come across Ben walking past the front lawn of the school near the parking lot. His eyes catch hers. They hold each others gaze for a little while until she glares at him, thinking of their arguement they had had just yesterday. He can tell she's still pretty upset, and he obviously knows why, so he decides its safest to keep walking, because either way, he would eventually see her in his maths class sometime today. Eleanor picks up on their exchange. She can tell when there is something wrong between the two.
"What's going on with you and Ben?" She questions.
Devi groans, swinging her bag on her back, furiously.
"Oh nothing." She snaps, which suprises Eleanor. Fab suddenly turns to her, a look of shock too.
"That doesnt sound like nothing. Are you guys are ok?"
"Yeah, yeah. Fine. His... his just so damn annoying sometimes." She grumbles. Fab and El both exchange looks. Making Devi feel as though she should give in and tell them. "He did something... really dumb... and now..." she groans hard. "Im just angry with him ok?" She stops and sighs, as she sees their confused faces. "He... he had some discussion with my mum... telling her that I shouldn't work! That it were his fault I crashed his car... and that I should try my best to get into college."
"Ok." Eleanor awkwardly snickers, sounding alittle suprised. "It sounds like maybe his trying to help? Just wanting to help you out? Maybe?"
"No El! But his not." She cries, a defensiveness in her tone.
"Ok?" Eleanor concludes awkwardly.
"He can't control my life!" She cries. "He cant just decide things for me! He wants me to go to his choice of college. He doesnt want me to get a job. He doesnt want my help to help pay for his car... that I damaged... and he talked to my mum instead of allowing me to make my own decisions."
The girls can both clearly tell she is fuming. Because Ben may think his trying to help Devi, but Devi also knows his not. She desparately wants to go to college with Ben... but Harvard is not her choice. And she wants to be the one to help him for once (with his car) but he wont even let her. Most of all, why would he think he could tell her if she could handle the load of working whilst studying? That would never be something he could ever tell her what to do.
"That is true." Fab agrees, nodding her head. Devi points to Fab.
"Yes, thank you Fab."
"Ok. But just go out and get a job anyway. I could ask around at the grocers where I work? They may give you a position. And if your mum doesn't agree... you could just tell her your saving for college?" El says cheerfully.
Devi's smile begins to beam at her.
"Yes El. That is what I will do."
