She sits across from him. And she's unbelievably confused. Like, utterly baffled. His sitting there, wolfing down his chips whilst she watchs him. Why would he have brought her here? To a greasy fast food joint... as though that would have impressed her somehow? I mean, not that she's not going to enjoyed her delicious juicy burger and devour down some salty chips with him, now that they were already here... And, right now, she cant deny, she were really hungry, she'd had a long long day and... she were still adorned in her work uniform. And she cringes as she watches as he inhales down his burger, as though he hadn't eatten all day... this was truelly unromantic in every way. But! leading back to the point! Bringing her here and making it out to seem like a big deal... no, no way... now that annoyed Devi, extremely, and made her wonder what were he thinking?! That taking her somewhere so casual and... unromantic... to try and mend things... And possibly think that this were somehow funny?! She heaves a sigh, as he picks up his drink and slurps some of it down. Devi's not dumb... he were here to mend things, but in the dumbest possible way... not nearly as impressive as the way he had made it out to be. Her brows furrow on him as he sits there across from her, watching her with an annoying smile dancing on his face, now playfully biting at a chip held to his mouth. She's resisting the urge to roll her eyes, and instead clears her throat, trying to contain some zen, and stop her frustration from consuming her.
"Soooo..." She hums, drumming her hand on the table, a little agitated, looking around, then slowly drifting her gaze back to him, giving him a bored look. "You... you wanted to bring me here? To McDonald's... And this is your 'suprise'" she says, finger quotation on 'suprise'. She picks up a chip, and pops it in her mouth. He takes his drink again, humming happily to himself, almost as though he weren't even listening as he takes a drink... And Devi... she... she feels her frustration building. Is he playing at this like a joke, Devi thinks to herself. She's annoyed now... like really annoyed... scrunching her nose up at him. Why does he think this is funny?
"Ben? Wow, Im so impressed." she drawls sarcastically. "How you chose a popular greasy fast food joint over... you know... something a little more authentic and classy... with you know, like, waiters and fancy food... something more worth my time and worth getting excited about." She sarcastically and mockingly smiles at him. He puts his drink down and wipes his mouth, coughing a little laugh, which irritates her further. His being a bit of a jerk, Devi fumes in her mind.
"Devi... listen... I simply can't afford to take you to a nice fancy resturant with fancy food and everything right now... I mean... I'm sort of broke." His smug smile grows. She cringes at him and scoffs.
"Wow. Your being cheap. Why are you even doing this? Did I do something? I actually really dont understand... And frankly... your really peeing me off right now." She says, turning slightly red, her frustration forming into anger, and becoming a little figitty, trying to contain herself. She doesnt get what his game is! He wanted to take her somewhere, makes it out to be a big 'suprise' and chooses to bring her here. He drops himself back into his booth, arms spreading out over the head of the booth, watching her with an amused smile. She can feel the irritation bubbling in her now, just pursing her lips at him.
"You haven't exactly asked me something important." He says simply.
She shrugs, obviously too annoyed at this point to even really care any more.
"What?" She tries mockingly to smile at him, but it's seems futile.
He watches her as he reaches deep into his jean pocket, and pulls out something. Leaning forward, he slides his hand slowly over to hers, turns her hand over and places something inside, then gently folding her fingers over it. She furrows her brows at him in confusion. Opening up her hand, her eyes dart back and forth from him to her hand, as she reveals a key planted on the palm of her hand. Ben leans closer, eyes watching her, unblinking. Her eyes widen on him, even more confused now.
"What's this?" She questions. His smile breaks into a grin, eyes never leaving hers.
"This... is why, Devi, I sort of can't take you to a fancy resturant for now. As much as I would want to."
Her eyes wonder over him with curiosity... she's still not following...
"W-what are you talking about Ben? I don't get it?"
He drops back into his seat again, watching her, then letting his eyes drifts to the carpark... her eyes following his gaze. Outside, as she gazes through the window, she sees a little yellow beetle Volkswagen sitting in the parking lot by itself, away from the other cars parked. It looks so new, clean, and it glistens at her as it sits there. Devi doesn't know much about cars, but it definitely looks like a newer model... And she's... she's speechless... Her eyes widening on him in shock... Her heart literally jumping in her chest and feeling as though it could exploded into a million pieces at any moment... the excitement is too much to contain to herself, so she jumps to her feet, startling Ben alittle.
"Hell. NO!" she exclaims, gaping at him. Ben doesnt know if to be terrified or happy for her, from the sheer aggressiveness of her ecstatic happiness running deep through her right now. She wants to scream. She literally wants to scream. She wants to jump around. Her feet bobbing up and down in excitement, she doesn't know what to do! "You mean... you mean... you bought me a car?" She squeals, a bit too high pitched it hurts his ears.
Ben nods his head. He gets up to walk to her, but she's already leaped at him before he can, wrapping her arms firmly around him, bouncing on him up and down. When her energy finally calms alittle more, he starts to wrap his arms around her and draws her in, resting his chin on her head, as she sways them from side to side, sheer excitement still bubbling through her veins.
"Why?" She breaths, her voice alittle shaky. "I didnt exactly win our bet."
"It's not about the bet, Devi. But, you know what would be good? If we made a new deal?" He brings his gaze back down to her. "If we don't end up going to the same college... that we need to make an effort to see each other... like every week? At least? What do you think? We should Skype often. We should meet every holiday. We need to try? Right? It will be four years of intense study... but we need to make some certain commitments that will keep us... together."
Her heart is so full right now... beating incredibly heavy and fast... maybe the reason she felt so overwelmed with the need to to follow him... to agree with him. She wants to go with him more and more then ever... And maybe she's considering that if she were to get in to Harvard with him... she would follow... but were these just feelings and emotions from the heat of the moment...
"Maybe when I apply for Harvard... if I do get in... I think I may go with you, Gross." She says, then chuckles as she leans in, and kisses him slowly and softly.
His eyes widen on her as she pulls back, her words still processing.
"But... umm... what about Princeston? That's where you want to go."
"I don't know... maybe Im considering Harvard even more now... but Ill apply either way. Let's see what happens." She beams at him, as she tucks into him. Ben's too deep into thought as he rests his head on hers. "How did you even buy a car? You haven't even paid for your Tesla yet?"
It takes him time to answer, still stuck in his own thoughts. He clears his throat, bringing his attention back to her.
"Oh... umm. Someone at my dad's work were offering to sell their car at a cheaper rate... so I entered in on a deal with him... I let payroll transfer every week some of my pay until it's paid off. That's why you may not have seen me at school today. I went to pick it up." He smiles warmly at her. She takes his face with her hands, and can't resist the urge to kisses him again. There's a thrill running through her that she literally doesn't think she can stop kissing him, but the only thing breaking there kiss were when they hear the muffled call from a familiar voice.
"Gross?" Trent howlers. "Did she say yes?" He mockingly laughs. "I'm inviting myself to your wedding." He says from across the room. His comments don't faze Ben one bit and he turns back to Devi, taking her hand, as he begins to guide her out, to find her car. She turns to him as they are outside.
"Like I promised, I would help pay for your Tesla too, Ben. I haven't backed out on my deal either. We got to get your car back on the road too."
He just smiles at her, knowing it wouldn't matter what he says to change her mind, but either way, his thoughts are stuck on the fact that it were more tempting to have her come with him to Harvard now, knowing she were more happy to go with him. Were there a way he could make sure she could get in... increase her chances of getting choosen for Harvard? So potentially... she could say yes?
