The funeral tea was held at the Lachowski's house. All of Caitlin's extended family from Switzerland were there but her Aunt Carol was the only one from her dad's side.
"Hey Jenna" she said when she spotted me coming to the cupcake stand.
"Carol" I said trying to muster up the best smile possible. She wrapped her arms around me. We stood there like that for what felt like forever.
"Are you okay?" We said at the same time. A smile crept onto both our faces.
"Creepy.." She said which caused us both to burst into a fit of laughter.
"Sshhh" I heard an old lady say. We grinned at each other and walked outside to the garden where a few people were sitting. "Your eulogy was wonderful Jenna, she would have loved it." She said. I nodded and once again pulled her into a tight hug. I’m not much of a hugger but her embrace was so loving and warm that you couldn't reject it.
"Hey do you know where Spencer is?" I asked her.
"No, why? Are you two okay?" How did she know about that? Did Caitlin tell her?
"I..I don't know. He completely ignored me at the funeral and he hasn't tried to phone me whole week. I get that Caitlin's his sister and he needs some time but why can't we get through this together? Why would he want to do this alone? Why would anyone want to do this alone?" Carol looked at me sympathetically and wiped a tear that had fallen from my eye and was rolling down my cheek.
"He just needs some time" she affirmed.
"How long is he planning on taking, it’s been a week?" I said to her.
"Jenna, do you hear yourself? He just lost his twin sister it’s gonna take more than a week to get over it."
I hate to admit it but she's right. How can I expect Spencer to be okay right after his sister died. As much as I would like to be there for him, if he doesn't want me I can't force it.
________________________"Hey dad" I answered as I picked up the house phone when we walked inside. "Jenna, how are you holding up?" He asked me.
What besides my best friend being dead and boyfriend ignoring me?
"I'm okay, I guess." I replied.
"How's Spencer?" My dad continued.
"He..uhm..he's fine." I stuttered.
"Are you two okay?" My dad pressed on.
"What's with all the questions dad? I'm not a damn search engine!" I yelled into the receiver.
"Sorry" I said softly. "I just.. I don't know. Dad I've got to go, mom's calling me" I lied once again and hung up.
I turned around to find my mother, her face full of concern. "What was that about?"
What was that about? Why was my dad asking so many questions?
"Dad just wanted to know how I was doing." I said and sauntered into the kitchen. My mother followed and poured herself a glass of water and sat down.
"Well I was wondering the same thing." She said. "How are you doing? All week you have been moping around and this morning I come into your room to find you awake and actually doing something."
"Mom, I'm fine. I was just sad this week. How could you expect me to be fine straight away?" a flash of worry crossed her eye.
"I'm fine now though." I added and she nodded at what I just said.
