Chapter Twenty: Hunt

Jasper grabbed Alina's hand as he darted from the field and towards the house, trying to get back as quickly as possible. The conversation with the nomads had gone awry and now the one they refer to as James wanted Bella. And he would stop at nothing to get her. Even if it meant tearing through the coven entirely.

It wasn't as if they could run and hide. James was a tracker. He could find any one of them just by knowing their scent. It made him dangerous; it made him a threat to everything Carlisle had built for his family; it made him a force to be reckoned with.

Laurent had met the Cullens back at the house. Telling him about how much James obsessed with the hunt, and how he would stop at nothing to have just a taste of Bella's blood. He also spoke of the woman, Victoria, and how lethal she was with her loyalty to her mate. And how she would do anything for him.

Jasper and Alina had stayed with Carlisle, Esme, and Rosalie to interrogate Laurent whilst Alice, Edward, Emmett and Bella had headed back to her home to gather supplies for the next few days as everyone agreed that Bella couldn't stay in Forks.

"You can't take her," Carlisle said. "He'll be expecting that."

Edward stared at Carlisle like he was an idiot. "You think I should let her go alone?"

"Of course not," Alice said. "Jasper, Alina, and I will take her. We'll go to Phoenix. He won't expect that.

Edward looked down, mentally debating all of their options. It did seem like the best plan but one thing didn't sit right with him. He looked towards Alina and Jasper. "Can you two handle this?"

Alice spoke up instead "Give them some credit, Edward. They've been doing very well all things considered, especially Jasper."

Alina squeezed her mate's hand, hoping that whatever the outcome of these next few days would be, Jasper would be okay. He would be fine. And that he would live. She didn't realise that Jasper was also thinking the exact same thing about her. He felt like the world would end without her with him.

Soon enough, the four of them had piled into Alice's car and were heading south towards Arizona. Alina sat in the passenger seat next to Jasper who was driving. Alice had chosen to sit next to Bella in the back as the two of them were the closest.

Bella had fallen asleep within half an hour of the start of the day long journey (at least it would be if Jasper was following the speed limits. But luckily he wasn't and the journey was around 14 hours) only to wake up as Jasper carried her into the airport. Alina couldn't blame her for wanting to sleep, if she was human and going through this, she would want nothing but a bit of piece.

She seemed anxious when she had woken up especially after she had taken a phone call. The three vampires chose to give her some private with the call but Alina was staring to regret that choice as Bella was acting almost as if she knew something was askew. Her theory was confirmed when she randomly spurred that she needed the bathroom. Bella was never good at lying and Alina could see right through her.

"I'll be right back with Bella, I don't think she should be alone right now." Alina said, darting after the human.
