Chapter Sixteen: Cat and Mouse"Edward started to mention how we hadn't gotten married yet..." Alina said, seemingly out of nowhere. She and Jasper had spent the day lounging around in their shared room, talking about nothing and everything all at once. The conversation had dwindled down around a hour ago so Jasper was slightly startedled by the sound but he quickly composed himself once again before nodding to allow Alina to continue to speak, "Do you think we should start planning that? What, it's been forty years... What are we waiting for?"
"I don't know, Darlin'" Jasper said, starting to rub his hand up and down Alina's arm. It was a habit he picked up to comfort her when she switched to vegetarianism and never seemed to be able to break. "I just never felt any rush. We're together, and that's all I need. But if you want to speed things along, I'm sure Alice wouldn't mind starting to plan it..."
She just hummed along, agreeing with everything Jasper had said. What was the rush of getting married when everything was perfect the way it was. A wedding wouldn't change that, it's just a contract after all. She didn't need a piece of paper to verify her love for Jasper, she knew that without him, there would be no her. And she also knew that he felt the same way. What was the rush after all?
"You're right," Alina turned in his grip so she was looking directly at him whilst Jasper kept his gaze on the ceiling. "Edward was just being pushy, I guess."
"When isn't he?"
----------
The next day, both Jasper and Alina returned to Forks High School. Alice had insisted they come, something about moral support for Edward. Apparently, Isabella Swan was being asked to the dance, even though it was a girl's choice event. Edward seemed tense at this, he had started to grow fond of the Swan girl. The rest of the coven were hesitant though.
Watching the two of them interact was highly amusing for Alina, because no matter how hard he tried, Edward Cullen couldn't figure out Bella Swan. Seeing him so frustrated by not being able to use his gift on her was the cherry on top of this entire situation. For years, she had to endure Edwards constant mockery when he read her thoughts (all though most of it was in jest, she still found it annoying).
This game of cat and mouse between the vampire and the human, only grew to be more amusing as the days passed on and Alina hoped that it didn't have an end in sight, but like most hopes and wishes, it didn't come true.
Not even three weeks after Alina had returned from Alaska did Alice tell everyone the news. Bella had taken Edward into the woods alone to speak to him. She was determined to get answers from him, one way or another.
Isabella Swan knew that the Cullens were vampires.
