Chapter Twenty-Three: ShardsIt was cold.
That was the first thing Alina noticed when she opened her eyes again. That it was cold. And that was strange; she hadn't felt the temperature outside since she underwent her vampiric transformation. The only warmth she experienced was when she was with Jasper. But she was cold. Undoubtedly cold.
That was the first strange thing.
The second was that she was alone. Just moments ago she had been fighting the tracker, James, trying to stop him from attacking Bella. She was losing until- Until she had sacrificed herself for the human. She thought she would be dead. But she wasn't. Also strange.
The last, and most concerning thing was that she wasn't on the floor. She held no contact to anything. She was about an inch from the ground and she had no idea why. She managed to propel herself into a sitting position to find herself still floating.
Alina reached her hand out in front of her. It was still there and visible, but she could see the rest of the charred studio around her. She could see where James had knocked down pillars in his battle against her.
Standing up, her feet finally touched the ground but she felt weightless. She moved over to some shards from the broken mirror in the far left hand side and looked deeply into the glass to find nothing. She couldn't see her reflection. She wasn't there.
Alina Cullen did not exist.

The trip from Phoenix to Forks was long. Alina had to find her own way home. She managed to walk onto buses and trains without being noticed. She knew she could've ran back but she didn't want to test her vampiric abilities out without Carlisle with her. He knew the bounds of vampirism better than Alina did herself and experimenting with things things alone could be dangerous. She had nearly died once and she didn't want to seal her fate away again.
It was only as she was walking through Oregon did she realise that nobody could see her. She tried grabbing peoples attention but they saw right through her. At first she thought it was a cosmic fluke that she couldn't see her reflection at the studio in Phoenix but the signs were all pointing towards something sinister.
That thought was only amplified as she walked. into her home to find it empty. There were sheets on all of the furniture to protect it from dust. The albums had been packed away. Walking through the house, Alina opened the doors to the bedrooms to find the same things in each one. All signs of life gone. At least that was the case until she ope ned her and Jasper's door.
The room looked like it had been ransacked. Books knocked to the ground, things thrown around and the closet door was off its hinges. Someone had caused some major damage and it pained Alina to think Jasper may have had caused this.
"Oh." Alina sighed. It was clear that her family was no longer here. They had left. She had nobody left. It wasn't like she could contact them, they always changed all of their details when they moved. There wasn't a person alive they would leave their contact details with.
Except Bella Swan
