Chapter Forty-Eight: Glory
Rosalie sat on the sofa, a sleeping Renesmee in her arms. It was quiet throughout the house, a comfortable silence but the house being this still was rare for a family who never slept.
Jasper sat on the far end of the sofa, with Alina next to him with her legs draped over his lap. The two had been there the longest out of the family, barely moving for nine hours. It was nice, the pair always appreciated the quiet; it gave them time to think.
They were enjoying the calm before the inevitable storm which came from having a newborn vampire in the house. It was moments away from Bella waking up and Jasper knew that controlling Bella would be his responsibility, considering he was the one with the most knowledge on the subject.
"We better be heading up." Alina murmured to Jasper, trying to to startle him from his thoughts. "She'll be awake soon."
Jasper hummed, going to stand up, and in the process knocking Alina's legs down to the ground. "I don't want you up there, Darlin'."
"Why not?" Alina stood up to make eye contact with her mate.
"Because you've seen the damage newborns could do." Jasper gestured towards his arms which were littered in scars. Alina briefly looked down at them before resuming eye contact with him. "I can't have you getting hurt."
"I'll be fine."
"Please. I can't lose you. Not again." Jasper begged. "I know you'll most likely be fine, Doll. But please don't make me risk you."
Alina finally relented after seeing the look in her mate's eyes. She sat back down on the sofa, after promising that she'd come find him if he wasn't back within the hour.
Rosalie looked at the girl amused, "So you haven't told him yet." She whispered so only Alina could hear.
"No. It's not something you can just bring up."
"What? That you can't be hurt because things can go right through you?"
"Yes. Exactly that."
"Just tell him that then; what's the worst that can happened?"
Alina rolled her eyes. "We have an argument that causes the apocalypse and we all die in a fiery glory?"
—————
Bella had adapted to her new life well. Not even noticing the urge to feed at first, more concerned about seeing her daughter. It confused them all, especially Jasper, who, in all his years of working and training newborns, had never seen one act with such restraint. If he didn't know better, he'd say it was a supernatural occurrence in itself.
So by the hour was up, he was already back in his spot on the sofa, Alina's legs once again draped over his own.
"They'll be back soon," he said, absentmindedly.
"Yeah?"
Jasper hummed, looking down at Alina's legs. To any other bystander, he would look lost in thought but Alina knew better.
"What is bothering you, Jazz?"
"What?"
"Something is on your mind. What is it?"
Jasper sighed, "Bella has shown such restraint as a newborn. More than I have ever shown in all my years as a vampire. The thought that maybe I was made to be a killer and she wasn't..."
"Maybe it's because she was prepared for vampirism before hand. None of us that that privilege. Even Carlisle drank human blood and struggled with his thirst for years. Now look at him." Alina pointed out as she traced small shapes onto Jasper's skin, trying to comfort him. "We'll get there. Together. You and me, like always."
"Promise?"
"Promise."
