My mouth went completely dry. I almost couldn't breathe.
"Wha... What do you m-mean?" I managed to say shakily.
"Well... Since you barely know me. I will let your mom explain it." Mason said. I was super confused, as if I had been knocked out for a few hours and missed the world ending or something.
My mom clears her throat and begins talking very soft and slowly.
"There's a reason why it's just me and you in our family. We didn't live here before... We..." Her voice drags off. She has never been this nervous and shaky, "we were born in Africa... Not New York." She finally says.
My jaw drops almost as quick as my stomach. Why has my mom been hiding this from me? Why did we leave? I felt like I was going to throw up. I pause and wait for her to continue.
"I was born there too." Mason speaks up. Did he already know me before he came? I thought as my eyes widened.
"Our family... They were not welcomed in Europe. Our... Special... Abilities scared people. People thought we were inhuman. Unnatural." Mom said.
Inhuman? Unnatural? Am I not human? I suddenly felt the urge to pull off my skin and see what was underneath.
"The things they did to us were sick... They would torture us... They even cut one of us open just to see what was inside-" she cut herself off with a whimper. A tear trailed down her face. I was still confused.
"Who's we?" I said, afraid to make her more upset.
"Us... Our family. We have... Special... Abilities Paige. We are different then most people..."
"How?"
"Imagine us as superheroes... We have supernatural traits that make us unique. I could heal... Your grandmother could tell the future. My sister could grow things... She made the most beautiful flowers..." She stopped and smiled a little, "You would think that people would love us... But they didn't." She looked away for a second, this must have really hurt her.
"We had to leave Europe. I was just three when we did. We went somewhere where nobody would ever find us... In the desert."
I gasped. I was on the edge of my seat. All of this was so new to me, but I was still confused at how Mason came into this.
"Well... It wasn't really a desert. We were close to it though. We stole a boat and sailed across the Mediterranean. It was a terrible few weeks... But we made it to the shores of Africa. We found a place there... We were welcomed with open arms. They accepted us."
Mason painted a small smile on his face, "My grandparents ran that place when they came. My dad was about five." Now I'm starting to put the pieces together.
"That's right. Anyways..." My mom let out a loud sigh, "I'm about to tell you something Paige. Something I have been keeping from you until you were ready."
I took deep breaths. I was ready...
"Everybody in our family has some special ability... You... Well... I had you at thirty... I loved you the moment I saw you... You know how your grandmother could tell the future... She saw something... She saw you being the most powerful. She told me I needed to protect you, or else things would go bad... Very very bad, she told me."
That explained everything. I always thought I was different from everybody else. I acted like a normal eighteen year old, but I just always felt like I didn't fit in inside. I'm also guessing this has something to do with all the exploding objects.
Mason nodded his head, "They did... They still are." He sighs and runs a hand over his jaw, "There was another town... We didn't even know it was there until they invaded. They called themselves the Canines. They came in and just... Destroyed everything."
"They killed our family, Paige." My mom said. I was in shock, I couldn't move, I felt like I was going to cry.
"It was all people that attacked, but there was one dog... And after they killed your family and left... They came back... And sent more dogs. And more. And more..." Mason said, his voice getting shaky.
He continued, "Your family helped us so much. We had grass, trees, food and water because of them! We were barely alive before they showed up. And without them... The city began to suffer deeply."
"I didn't want you to go back..." My mom chimed in, "I was too afraid you would get hurt. Mason came to New York over the Summer to convince me to let you go back. I agreed. I gave him money for clothes and school so he could blend in and get to know you."
"Paige... I'm asking you to come back to Africa with me." Mason said.
I couldn't believe what I was hearing. The past week has been a huge lie. I started to feel really angry.
"So you just came here to recruit me?... You didn't care about the beach or tonight or anything?" I said, my voice rising with every word.
"Nonono it was not like that! I was going to just come out and tell you... But I got to know you and you turned out to be so beautiful and sweet. I just wanted to get to know you." Mason said.
My anger disappeared. His voice was so sweet and tender I just had to smile.
"You don't have to go if you don't want to." He says, breaking the lingering silence as they wait for my answer.
"I... I... I don't know what to say... I... I'm not sure what-" I stagger until Mason interrupts me.
"I can give you some time to think about it." He says, "I would kiss your cheek, but I don't want anything exploding." He chuckles his adorable chuckle I can't get over and he gives me a big hug as he leaves. My mom flashes me a quick smile as I walk up the stairs to my bedroom.Hey guys! :) I'm sorry this chapter took so long I've been super busy. Im new to Wattpad so im just learning to do this stuff.
