I tried as hard as I could to pry the heavy object off of me. I sat in the middle of the chandelier. A small opening sheltered me from getting hit too hard, but I did get a bloody lump on my head from the fall.
Most of the candles blew out from the crash, but a few caught my dress. I quickly patted out the fires, severely burning my hand. The smoke wasn't helping my head too much either.
I wearily looked around the room. The sight was horrible, everything happened way too fast. All around the party room, people were getting knives thrown at them, shot by guns, and bitten by vicious dogs. I screamed at the sight. There was more blood than floor on the ground. I almost threw up at all the gore I was witnessing.
The first time I saw the dogs, was what I hoped was the last time. They didn't care who they were biting, they just attacked. Their teeth and claws dug deeply into the nearest body part they could find. White foam sprayed out of their mouths. They looked exactly how they did in my dreams.
The soldiers were just as bad. They just hit, pushed, and killed whatever and whoever was in their way. They wore mostly black clothing and they had many weapons attached to them.
"Paige! I'm gonna get you out of here! Don't worry!" I heard Mason's terrified voice to my right. A dog sprang after him, but he pulled out a knife and speared its face first. He tried really hard to pull off the chandelier, but kept failing.
"Mason! You're gonna get hurt! Just go!" I said loudly.
Mason's face was now stained with tears, "I can't leave you!" He screamed.
"Yes you can!" I yelled back. Mason was now being forced out by some soldiers, pointing a gun at his head. If he tried to get away, he would be blown to bits.
"Mason! Don't fight! Just leave!" I screamed.
Finally, most of the people escaped, but many still laid on the ground, dead.
I tried my best to stay calm. The room was now just full of soldiers and dogs. I saw a larger man with jet black hair and a wrinkly face walk in casually. I almost fainted when I saw him.
He was the exact same guy in my dream.
What does this mean? I thought, how did I know what he looked like?
He slowly walked up to where I was trapped, stepping over dead bodies like they were nothing.
He was smoking a cigar in his right hand, which made me gag. He must be the leader of the Canines, I thought.
"Paige... I expected your arrival. We had to rush our men down here when we heard the commotion! You were just a tyke the last time I saw you. lift it off of her! I want to get a better look! I am Kodak. Chief of the Canines." The leader roared.
Many guys lifted the chandelier off of me. I was now face to face with the horrible man.
I held my ground, I stood tall, I didn't move, and I for sure made it look like I wasn't scared. Even though on the inside, I was petrified.
"What do you want." I said sternly. He began to walk around me as he answered my question.
"I wanted to check out the competition. But by the looks of it, there isn't much." He sneered. I gave him a nasty look.
"But... What's on the inside is what matters. You Martins are a danger to my plans in society. All must be destroyed... Or used..." Kodak said.
What does he mean by used? I thought.
"You don't scare me." I said proudly.
"Oh honey, I can change that." He gave me an evil look before gesturing to one of his men to tie my hands with a rope.
I kicked and screamed as he tried to tie me, my bloody head throbbing in protest. I stopped struggling when I heard a loud bang on the entrance door, the dogs began to growl and snarl.
"Paige! Don't fight back! They'll kill you!" I heard Mason's screams from behind the door. The man tied my hands when I stopped.
"Lets get out of here before they find a way in! Now!" The chief growled.
A few men held my arms as they led me out of the party room, or what's left of it.
I got gasps and stares as I walked through a trail of crying people, hovering over their dead loved ones. The people looked like they lost hope, like all the color was drained from their lives.
I felt completely humiliated, I let all of those people down. I was most likely being walked to my death bed.
I heard many footsteps, out of the side of the party room stood Mason and a few others with weapons in their hands, James was next to him.
"Let her go!" Screamed Mason. They got inches away from the head master when the people holding my arms grabbed me by the neck and pulled me into the air. I couldn't breathe, I could feel the red rushing to my face. A guy put a knife up to my face. I could feel the cold blade on my hot face.
"One more move and I will cut her up and fry her in a pan!" Kodak screamed. Mason tried to get closer to him, but James held him back.
My vision started to blur, and I still tried to get air into my mouth.
"OKAY!!! LET HER GO!!! SHE'S GONNA FUCKING DIE!!!!" I heard Mason screech. Tears were running down his face.
The men released me. I fell on the ground, bringing in air to my lungs in huge breaths.
"Let's move! And if I see as much as a hair on my territory, I will feed her to my dogs!" Kodak and everybody else stomped off with me. I mouthed "I love you" to Mason as I passed him. His face was drenched in tears, which made me shed a few of my own.
They walked me all the way across a vast desert. It was evening, and my feet throbbed in my sandy heels as we reached a vast door with walls that seemed to go on forever. My throat felt dry and I was drenched in sweat.
I saw Kodak punch in a code to open the doors. I watched it carefully, I thought it would be useful for the future.
1...2...9...0...5
A dog saw me watching the code. He sank his teeth into my lower leg, I screamed in pain when the dog didn't let go. I could already see the blood stains in the sand.
Kodak swatted the dog on the head and he released.
"Bad dog! That is not how we treat guests!" He gave a small evil laugh as he opened the doors.
Inside was nothing like Mason's home. The streets were dimly lit with poorly done houses. There were no people in front of their houses, and there was no sound, except for the low growl of the dogs, and the dragging of chains.
It seemed like there were only a few rows of houses. All the extra space was taken up by a very large metal building. It towered over everything else, and it took up almost all of the space in the large, fenced in city. What could they possibly need that much space for? I thought.
My leg hurt so much I couldn't even shuffle forward. When a guard pushes me forward I cry out in pain.
Kodak turns around with a cold look on his face, "Use your other leg!"
I am forced to move up the street, my leg hurt so much, my vision went blurry again, I could feel the blood pounding through my head. I tried the best to keep my screams to myself.
I almost passed out when we finally reached a large stone building. Inside had large corridors filled with doors. Each one had a small window on the front.
It was a prison.
They threw me in the nearest one and chained my arms to the wall. There was only one dim candle in the whole room.
I slumped down to finally rest my leg. It was throbbing and purple. The veins popped out and it was twice its normal size.
"What shall I do with you..." Kodak paced around the room with his soldiers behind him.
"What can you do..." He asked me. I scolded him.
"I don't know," I said sternly, "I haven't found out yet."
"Bullshit!" He sneered, "Tell me or I'll slit your throat!"
"I said I don't know!" My voice got louder, "If I did I would've broken these chains and killed you with fire!"
Kodak turned to the nearest soldier and reached into their large pocket. He pulled out a brown whip.
I choked on air for a second, my body froze as he lifted up the whip and cracked it against my arm.
I let out a yelp of pain as I felt the stinging of the new wound on my arm. The blood was already running down my arm and making a pool on the floor.
"Not so cocky now, are you?" Kodak laughed, "you wanna tell me now, princess?"
"I said I don't fucking know!" I shouted as loud as I could. The pain in my body was so intense, it was hard to see and think and talk.
"Wh-why-why do you-you wanna know a-anyways." I tried my best to say.
"That is none of your business!" Kodak yelled. I spat at his feet. Or at least I thought I did, I couldn't see very much. I was pretty sure I did because Kodak let out a frustrated growl.
"If you are not of any use to me or my plans, then there is no reason keeping you! SOLDIERS!" He snapped. All of the people in the room straightened as he turned to them.
"Have an execution scheduled tomorrow morning! MOVE!" He shouted at them. The soldiers exited the room. Kodak looked through the window after the door was closed.
"If I get any news about you from the guards, I will burn you and your whole city!"
When he was out of sight, I sat against the wall and cried my eyes out. My dress and face were covered in sweat, blood, and makeup.
This is it, I thought, I will never see my mom again, my friends, Mason, anybody.
I thought about how much I would miss coming home from school and watch How I Met Your Mother with my mom, she would already be sitting on the couch with the next episode paused.
I thought about the first time I met Mason, our eyes meeting on that bus.
I thought about all of my sleepovers with Carly and Jess, and our late night chocolate raves. We would go through all of the cabinets in the kitchen and find anything that had the least bit of chocolate.
I thought about the look on Mason's face when he finds out that I was dead. And how the entire town would be destroyed and everyone would die from the Canines, because their last glimmer of hope was hung from a wooden plank. Or even worse.
Burned to death.
A heard the door click open and I jumped. My blurry vision saw a frail, brown haired woman with a bucket of water, a tube of pills, gauze, and a rag.
She kneeled down beside me, I tried my best to dry up my tears. She examined my bite and whip wounds. I winced at her gentle touch.
"What are you doing?" I sniffled.
"I'm Alex, I am the nurse in this wretched town. I'm sorry this happened to you dear." She said softly.
She held out the bottle of pills, "Painkillers. They will get rid of the pain. Open." She said.
I tightened my lips and shook my head. I wasn't taking anything from these people.
"Suit yourself." She said.
She dipped the rag in the water and slowly patted my leg. I twitched and moved as she cleaned it. My vision got more blurry, and my eyes started to feel heavy. Alex patted my cheek to keep me from fainting.
"Stay with me Paige, I still have to clean your arm." She said. I was startled that she knew my name.
"How do you know my name?"
"Honey... Everyone knows your name. Everyone here was waiting a long time for you to come back and help us. Your city isn't the only one suffering you know." She talked quietly, so no guards could hear her.
She moved to my arm and began lightly patting it like my leg. I could already see infection in my body. She wrapped my arm and leg in gauze and continued talking.
"They have some of your soldiers here, he does the same thing to them that he just did to you. that's how we found out about you Martins. He wanted to use you guys for his own benefit, so he went to where you guys are and-"
BANG! A guard was pounding on our door. Alex hurried up and finished
her sentence.
"We've been waiting for you to get rid of Chief Kodak for years. So our cities can live in peace and you can stop Kodak from-"
"Hey! We don't have all night! Get to the other soldiers!" We were interrupted again by a guard pounding on our door.
"Ugh! Okay I have to go. Sleep safe my pretty. Everything will be alright." She gently caressed my cheek and left with her stuff.
That night, I just sat on the floor, letting the tears flow. No emotion on my face, not even a whimper. Just let the water pour out of my eyes, until my blurry vision, blazing headache, and sweaty, sore body lured me to sleep.
