"Paige... Wake up hon." Alex was shaking my good arm for me to get up.
"I'm sorry, but it's forbidden to give any of the prisoners breakfast." She said.
My vision cleared, but everything hurt when I moved.
"I'm gonna get you out of here."
My eyes widened when I heard her words.
"But... But how?" I stuttered. My mouth was really dry and it was hard to talk.
"I know more about this place than anyone." She confidently said. I smirked a little. She unlocked my chains and slid them off of my hands.
She pulled me to my feet and my body protested, pushing me pack on the ground. I couldn't even lift my arm without groaning in pain.
"Oh dear... I told you to take those pills last night. No use in taking them now." Alex shrugged, "Come on, baby steps, I've got you."
She grabbed my hand and slowly pulled me up. I tried my hardest to walk to the door, Alex kept her arms wrapped around me to support me from falling.
She looked through the window and her face dropped. There were loads of guards all around my door.
"Shit... Umm... Hide beside the wall, When the coast is clear, I want you to go through the right wing, out the doors, and wait for me there. Make sure you're hidden. Got it?"
I nodded my head. Everything was happening too fast. My painful body couldn't keep up with it. I wished I could just leave it behind and slap on a new one like a robot or something.
I stuck to the wall as she opened the door. The guard let her through easily.
Alex stepped into the room beside mine, and closed the door.
I slowly crawled to the other side of the wall, listening to what she was doing.
"Hello, it's me again." She said sweetly.
"Hey Alex." A scruffy man voice answered her.
"How are you?"
"Terrible as always. The infection is getting worse."
"You wanna do something for me?"
"Anything." The man's voice became lighter.
"Guess who's in that other room."
"Uhh... I don't know."
"Paige."
I heard a loud gasp, "No... Really! What is she doing here?!"
"They took her... And they're gonna kill her..."
"Say no more. I've lived long enough. Time for me to have a purpose in life! Oh this is great! I can see my wife again! And my children! Oh thank you so much Alex, and tell Paige I hope she does well."
I heard a clink of chains.
"Good luck Rufus." Alex stammered. I could tell she was crying.
I got up as fast as I could and looked out the door window. I didn't care how much my body hurt.
I saw a scrawny man with long gray hair rush through the doors and began screaming.
"IM FREE!!! IM GETTING OUT OF HERE!!! HELP!!!! HELP!!!!"
"He's escaped! Get him! He's running away!" Alex screamed. Every guard in the hallway ran towards the screaming man. Bless his soul.
The whole corridor was now cleared, not a single person or dog in sight. I opened the door with my good arm and stumbled through the empty hallway. My leg filled with pain with every step I took. My head pounded, making my vision blurry again.
I reached the door at the end of the hall, and felt for the handle, I burst it open and fell in the dirt outside.
I pulled my body against the wall, feeling like I had just went through a washing machine. Surrounding me were a few crates beside a paved path, leading to a few houses. The towering metal building was still surrounding me.
The door creeped open beside me, Alex's head popped out. She saw me and sighed in relief. Her face had a few splatters of blood on it. Her eyes were puffy and her face was wet with tears.
"You're okay. Good. Alright... Now... Put on this cloak. I will have to rip that dress off... So it's not noticeable." She said as she reached into one of the crates. She pulled out a long brown cloak and a knife.
"Okay I'm just gonna cut off the bottom poofy part. So the rest can be hidden in the cloak." She began ripping and tearing at the bottom of the dress as I was still sitting beside the wall.
"Okay... Now stand up and slip this on." She handed me the cloak and helped me up. She helped me put my arm into my sleeve. The cloak completely shielded my dress and hair.
"Take this, in case you run into any trouble." Alex handed me the knife and I stuck it inside the cloak pocket.
She helped me walk up to the giant metal building, she led me to a small alleyway between the building and the city walls.
"Nobody knows about this way. It's a quick hidden passage to the front doors." Alex whispered to me.
We creeped through the ally and finally ended up on the right side of the doors. Alex quickly punched in the numbers and let the door creep open enough for me to slide through.
"Be safe. Thank you so much. I promise I will do everything I can to stop this." I told Alex through the crack in the door.
"Bless you child. Keep your eyes open. And trust no one." Alex whispered. Her words took me by surprise. Those were the same words that have been repeated in my head ever since I can remember. She said it exactly how it sounded in my dreams. My mind was spinning about what this might mean.
When she shut the doors, I ran. I didn't care how much my body hurt, or how blurry my vision was getting, I just wanted to get out of there.
When I could no longer see the building over the sand dunes, I stopped to catch my breath. My throat was so dry I couldn't even speak, I could wring out a whole bucket of sweat from my red burnt skin, and my eyes thought the golden sand dunes looked purple. I forced myself to walk in the blazing heat.
I just kept going, I did not stop.
A thought popped into my head out of nowhere. The dream that I had about the dog chasing me through the desert, this looked like the exact setting. If I heard Alex say "trust no one", and I dreamt the exact picture if Kodak, then maybe other things that I've dreamt might come true.
I turned around cautiously and gasped.
There it was... The blurry picture of the dog running full speed toward me. I had to think quickly before it got me. I pulled out the knife in my pocket and held it clumsily, I never learned how to hold a knife.
I went off of what Mason did when he stabbed the one dog. When the dog pushed off of his feet and launched at me in mid air, I thrusted the knife into him. I thought I missed, because it looked like I aimed for his foot.
The dog fell to the floor and stopped growling. I squinted to see that I got it in the head! That was pure luck.
I took the bloody knife out of his skull, gagging a little as I did. I stuffed it back in my pocket.
I continued walking through the blue sand dunes.
My knees finally gave out after I tripped over a rock in the sand, my leg stung with searing pain. Everything hurt way worse than before. My vision was about to completely blank out when I saw a fuzzy shape running over a sand dune.
Behind the first fuzzy dot came more fuzzy dots. I freaked out, thinking that they were Canines trying to get me, but I realized they were something else when I saw the bright blue eyes I've been craving to see for hours.
"Mason?" I whispered.
"Paige!!!" The fuzzy dot with blue eyes screamed.
"Mason!!!!" I yelled as loud as I could.
He fell beside me, holding me close to his chest. I screamed in pain, the slightest touch felt like one million knives.
All the fuzzy dots crowded around me.
"Oh my god... Your leg... And arm! Come on! We gotta get her to the doctor!" Mason scooped me up into his arms, making me moan in intense pain. I couldn't take it anymore, so I let vision slip away into the darkness, and my body fell silent.---------
