A step away

The dream

Almost a kiss...just a step from it...so close but at the same time far away...Jack suddenly woke up when she heard the alarm clock ringing, she stood some minutes in the bed looking at the ceiling and thinking about the dream that she just had, it wasn't the first time...it was the third time in a week that she had this dream, exactly the same one, yes, maybe she liked it but at the same time it bothered her...she wanted that to become real but at the same time she knew that it was almost impossible.
After a couple of minutes Jack got up of the bed, she went in the bathroom and got ready for the day, she was almost at the door when she looked at the phone and realized that she was late to work, 𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘣𝘦 𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘣𝘭𝘦? she thought, she was sure that when she woke up it was early so she thought that after work she would check the alarm clock, maybe the time was wrong, there wasn't time for more question, she ran out of her apartmen and drove to work. While driving she thought again about that dream...she was so in love with him and that love between them was maybe impossible, there was a big wall between them...rule 12 also if she was pretty sure that Nick and Ellie were on the point of breaking it, she knew that Gibbs wouldn't delete it, maybe he would change idea...who knows.
She was waiting for the elevator when she felt something on her shoulder, she turned around, it was Gibbs, she looked at him "Hi Gibbs" she said but he didn't answer, when the elevator arrived they both went in, she tripped and fell on him, she felt so embarrassed, after a couple of minute that they were so close to each other, Jack took some steps away "Gibbs I'm sorry.." she said, Gibbs ignored her again, 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘸𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘩𝘪𝘮 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘸𝘩𝘺 𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘪𝘨𝘯𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘩𝘦𝘳? this question came up to her mind, some minutes later the doors of the elevator opened and Gibbs went to Vance's office, Jack went to the others.
McGee, Nick and Ellie were talking about something but Jack didn't really know what they were talking about because when they saw her coming they stopped talking and looked at her "Are you ok guys?" she asked and looked back at them, they didn't answer "Ok, why are you all ignoring me?" she asked and kept looking at them "Hm...we were talking about...huh" Nick started saying "We were talking about the fact that Nick wanted to buy a new car" Ellie said "Yes...we were talking about that" said McGee "I what?" Nick was saying but Ellie stomped on his foot "Yeah right...yes, we were talking exactly about that" Nick said and looked at Ellie "Well...ok" Jack knew that they were lying but she didn't want to continue the conversation so she walked away and went to her office.
Nick looked at Ellie "Why did you do that?" he asked "Well, you were going to make Jack discover that we were lying, I mean maybe she knows that we were but at least we had to try...we can't say to her that we were talking about her and Gibbs" she said "Right" said Nick.
Jack was doing some paper work while she was still thinking about what happened in the elevator, she couldn't take that out of her mind and felt embarrassed again and she was also thinking what were those three talking about, she had an idea of what they were talking about, probably the topic was her and Gibbs, in the last days it seemed there favourite topic, everytime that her or Gibbs arrived, they stopped talking and started acting weird and the fact that maybe the main topic was that thing, was pretty obvious.
Jack went back to her paper work but she couldn't really focus on it, she had too many thoughts in her mind and even trying to focus on the paper work was a really hard thing to do, suddenly someone knocked at the door, Jack ignored it and kept trying to focus on the work that she had to do.
Gibbs walked in and looked at her, she didn't even say hi and kept working "Uhm...Jack?.." he said "I'm busy...you can come back later..." she said while looking at the papers on her desk, Gibbs nodded and left. Maybe Jack wanted this, to make him go away...she really didn't want to talk with him in that moment.
