School the next day was as boring as always but when the last bell rang I headed straight over to Grandmother’s house to meet Minji. When I reached the house the grandmother was outside sitting in a chair.
“Hello Grandmother.” I said.
“Young man how can you leave a girl waiting. That girl has been here for an hour.” I looked at the grandmother questionly. “Oh, well maybe she was avoiding you.” The grandmother seemed to say to her self.
“Grandmother, why has Minji been here for so long?” I asked.
“Oh it’s nothing dear go on in.” The grandmother waved me into the house.
I walked into the house and heard sounds coming from the kitchen. When I entered the kitchen Minji was at the stove making something. She turned around to face me and smiled a weak smile.
“Oppa, I’m glad you’re here?” She turned back around to continue cooking.
“What are you doing?” I questioned while walking over to stand beside her.
She continued to focus on cooking. “Grandmother has a hard time cooking so I’m making enough meals to last until I come back Monday.”
I stood there for a minute and watched her. “Is there something I can help with?”
She thought for a minute. “Some kids threw trash in the yard again so if you could get a trash bag and go pick it up.”
I frowned slightly at being sent away but I grabbed a trash bag and headed outside anyway. When I walked out the door the grandmother looked at me from where she was sitting and smiled.
“She already sent you away I see.”
I looked over at the grandmother surprised. “Do you know why Minji has been avoiding me?”
She smiled slightly. “Are you going somewhere?”
“No. Not that I know of.” I said confused.
“But I think you are. She wouldn’t push you away for no reason would she?” The grandmother smiled at me again and I slowly walked away.
What was she talking about? I’m not going anywhere, I don’t even have plans for when I graduate. I shook my head and started working on picking up all the trash again. When I was working I realized I was humming my audition song. I laughed a little at the thought of me getting my own song stuck in my head. It was catchy though.
I worked for a little longer humming my song before I realized how stupid I was. My audition. Minji thought I was going to leave her and go to Seoul. How stupid can I be. I face palmed myself and walked back towards the house.
I entered the house and went straight to the kitchen. Minji was putting the food into containers.
“Minji. I need to talk to you.” I said and she looked back at me.
“What is it?” She said puzzled.
I got ready to explain to her about how she didn’t have to worry about me leaving when I realized how stupid that would sound. I sent an audition song to Seoul for a company. I graduate in a few weeks of course I’m going to leave.
“Oppa, what is it?” Minji said concerned.
“Um, just do you want to go somewhere when we’re done here?” I asked trying to cover up what I was thinking about.
Minji smiled. “Aren’t you grounded?”
“Well, yes but that doesn’t matter.” I said.
“Of course it does.” She said simply and went back to work.
I walked into the living room so Minji could continue to work. I looked around for a minute and noticed an old plastic lawn chair in the corner. I grabbed the chair and went outside. When I was outside I set up the chair beside the grandmother.
“Grandmother. What do you do when you know you have to leave someone behind but you don’t want to lose them?” I asked hoping she had some magical answer.
“Well, you just have to hope, that whoever that person is, they will wait on you.” The grandmother said.
“But what if you think it’s a bad idea for them to wait for you?” I said looking down at the ground.
The grandmother thought for a minute before answering. “Young man. That’s not a choice that you have. The only choice you have is to go or not.” I looked up at the grandmother surprised. “If you leave or if you don’t it’s up to the person if they wait for you or not.”
I looked back at the ground. It might not be my choice if Minji will wait on me but maybe she wouldn’t have to wait on me. I could not get a reply from the company or I could just choose not to go even if I get a reply. That is my choice. I don’t want to leave Minji.
“Oppa.” I turned around and saw Minji in the doorway.
I stared at her for a minute. She was in her school uniform and her long dark hair ran down her back. Her brown eyes seemed to be sparkling. I let out a big sigh because I knew I wouldn’t be able to leave her.
“Yes?” I asked.
“You can go home now if you want.” She smiled at me and walked back into the house.
I looked over at the grandmother. “If I choose not to leave how do I get that person to believe I’m really staying?”
The grandmother smiled at me. “You tell them you love them.”
I let the grandmother’s words sink in for a second. “Thank you.” I said and turned around to start my walk home.
The whole way home I thought of a plan to get Minji to stop worrying that I would leave her. It would just have to wait until graduation day. I smiled to myself and knew that my plan would work. There was no way Minji would believe that I was going to leave.
When I reached my house I went to my room and checked my email. When I opened it I saw in big letters BigHit Entertainment. I quickly opened the email. I read through it quickly and saw that it was a call back. The day after graduation I was suppose to go and do a in person audition for the company.
I stared at the screen for a long time not believing what was in front of me. When it sunk in I felt my heart drop. I would be giving up the opportunity of a lifetime if I stayed here. But I thought of Minji and all the fun we’ve had and how many friends I made because of her. I thought about all the stupid things I had done to protect her and all the stupid things she had done to protect me. I thought about how much she had changed me. I was a better person now because of her and I... I... I loved her.
