"Wake up, it's show time" Sammy says quietly while tossing Nate a gun.
"What do you mean?" I ask groggily, rubbing the sleep from my eyes.
"Cops are here" he says tossing me another. What? "Now, I'm going to break the window and toss this out," he lifted a blanket bundled to look like a person, "it'll land in the front, and our car is parked in the back. I want you both to wait in the fire escape until you hear the glass break. Then I want you to run down and get in the car. Drive until you come up to a lake. Then it'll be safe to stop. We'll meet you there". Briley seemed to comprehend everything because she got up and began walking out.
I however, was lost. I sat in the bed, half awake, trying to understand what Sammy was saying. Nate gave my hand a squeeze.
"We'll be fine"
"No you won't Nate. You both are injured. Sammy can barely walk." I tried emphasizing how bad of an idea this was, but seeing as there's no way out, that's our only option.
"Just go" he said kissing my lips. I thought about it for a second, but ultimately I knew there was nothing else to do. I quickly got up and followed Briley. She moved swiftly and quietly; people wouldn't even know we were there.
She led me to a door, and without knocking, she kicked it in. There was a couple watching tv, and when they noticed us, their eyes widened in shock and fear. Briley pointed her gun at them and I followed suit.
"Nobody is to move, say a word, or even breathe until we leave." I've never seen her so aggressive before.
She kept her gun pointed at them as she stepped out onto the fire escape. I closed the curtains and stepped out as well. We sat there, crouched on the fire escape, waiting for our cue.
A few minutes passed; anxiety growing with each tick of the clock and pound of the heart. They were taking too long. What if something went wrong? What if they got caught? I knew it was a bad idea.
Just then, a shattering sound emitted and I knew that's what we've been waiting for. Briley rushed down and the panic was returning. I was getting dizzy climbing down the countless ladders, slipping multiple times, but I made it down.
Briley ran ahead, but I knew I couldn't make it. I pushed to stay awake, although my body wouldn't cooperate. My knees buckled and the last thing I felt was the sizzling pavement against my cheek.
