She drove for 20 minutes before stopping in the alley of an abandoned building that was ten stories tall. She got out and began walking to a boarded door. I was hesitant.
"It's okay, no one cares about this place" she consoled. "The cops always see us coming in." Us.?
I followed her to the door, and she showed how the wood could come off and went in. Once I came in she boarded the door back up and led me to the stairs.
There was nothing in the building and there were holes in the walls, wallpaper stripped away, concrete floors, and dust everywhere.
We climbed to the top floor and she broke off the wood to a window that was extended to the floor by whoever was in here last. She walked into another room and came back with a jam jar full of weed.
"Want some?" she asked while putting some into the pipe. I shook my head no. She sat at the makeshift cliff, and dug through the jar, pulling out a lighter, and placed the pipe to her lips. She brought the lighter up and inhaled, pulled it away and exhaled. A cloud of smoke blew away with the wind.
She pulled out her phone, dialed a number, and put it on speaker. A voice I recognized to be Nate's picked up.
"Hey Nate what's up?" Briley spoke into the phone.
"Nothin' much why what's up?" He asked, his throaty voice making me long for him.
"I'm just with Katie, smoking. Thought you might wanna come"
"Katie, smoking?"
"No, just me. But she's here. If you wanna come you know where we are." With that she hung up. He does?
"I'll catch you up on everything while he's on his way" she shifted to face me. "Okay so you met Kian today. He's kinda been my boyfriend for 4 years. But our relationship is explosive. It can go off any minute and recovering is hard. But as in all wars, we do. We clean up the mess, then call a cease-fire. We'll get along until the next time bomb goes off... but being with each other is so inexplicably good, it's addictive... it's hard to explain, you'd have to be in it to understand." She took a hit and you could see her whole body relax.
"You're a strong person. You know that? You handle your business without even the slightest alteration in your appearance. It's like it doesn't even affect you."
"Well that's why I'm here" she smiled. "To let it affect me. To let it get into my skin and bother me and tear me to pieces. So no one has to see. You see, everyone has problems. Everyone. I know I'm not the only one with them, so why make them someone else's? They carry enough weight." And with that she took another hit.
A creak broke her thought signifying Nate was here, but he wasn't alone. He brought Sammy.
