The next day I wait for Soda to come home for work.
There's really not much else to do. I'm still feeling upset over last night and this morning he was gone before I even got up so it's not like we could talk about it. I didn't even know what I was going to say yet. I could just be honest - tell him we kissed and said goodbye or I could just tell him the short of it. That it's done with. Been handled.
I'm cleaning up after Soda, his shirts and jeans on the floor when I reach into the pocket of his pants and pull out a little white baggy. I hold my breath. Getting less and less shocked by things at this point, I sit on the bed, not sure what to do with it. Flush it? God, who knows anymore. This was new territory for me and I'm not sure how you're suppose to handle these things.
What I wanted to do was talk to Darry. I didn't want to be a snitch but if anyone would know what to do and knock sense into Soda it was him. Not to mention this was something he should already be aware of. I don't know how this had been kept from him for so long.
I hear the front door open and I sit up quickly, dropping the bag like I've been caught.
"Vee?"
"Johnny?" I call back, leaving the room to see him standing there staring back at me. "What? You got a key?"
He shrugs. "Well, yeah. I think everyone has a key to Sodas."
"Wow, that's uh, good to know." Glad Soda mentioned this to me. Now I have to be paranoid about anyone coming in at any time I guess.
"Sometimes when he drinks too much we gotta take him home. Just easier this way." He says, stifling a yawn. "So uh, kind of wanted to talk to you. Heard your moving here? Like, literally, here." He says, looking around the room. I know Johnny had mentioned me staying in Tulsa before so at least I didn't have to worry about another lecture from him about that.
"Jesus word spreads fast around here. Sorry, Johnny, I was going to stop by and tell you I've just been really busy. It literally just happened like, two days ago. Barely." I sit down on the couch and exhale.
Johnny takes a step forward and shuffles there awkwardly. "Yeah." He says, running his hand down the back of his neck anxiously. "Uh. Also heard you kissed Dallas."
"WHAT!"
"What!?" Johnny exclaims back, startled. He jumps back a little and I know the kid is a bag of nerves so I feel bad but still - what?!
"How the hell do you know that?!" I say, whisper/yelling. My heart speeds up. Lord, if I don't have a heartattack this week -
"Dally told me." Johnny said defensively. "Dally tells me everything."
I facepalm and fall back onto the couch. It had literally only been a couple of hours since I had left Dally and already he had somehow managed to call Johnny and tell him everything. I needed to stop underestimating their friendship because clearly, those two were inseparable.
"Johnny. I'm just. I don't know. Can I talk to you?" I ask, peeking my eye out at him through my palm to see his face.
"Yeah, course Vera. What's up? You know you can talk to me about this stuff. I won't judge. If you want advice I'll give you advice, if you want me to just listen I'll listen. Heck, this is kind of what I get paid to do anyway." He tells me, sitting down on the couch with me now. "So, spill, what's going on? You're kissing Dally, you're moving in with Soda, you're moving back to Tulsa -"
