Well. She's alive.
After a long night filled with worry and dread, Tony finally got the confirmation he was looking for. He didn't understand why he cared about her disappearance so much, he's never been the kind to worry about others. Especially not strangers.
Which is what she is, he reminds himself-even if it doesn't feel like it.
Tony has only known the girl for a couple of days, and yet, he feels like he's known her for a lifetime. When Clint begged him to let her stay in the tower, he never would've thought that it was going to cause him this much stress. Stress that was distracting him from his work.
After [Y/N] left him in the hallway, Tony made a beeline for his lab. It was the only space that he thought could calm him down. After four excruciatingly long hours, it finally worked and he was able to start working on his most recent project.
"Knock, knock," he heard from the door of the lab. Without turning around, Tony knew who it was, the only Avenger that knew what happened last night.
"What do you want birdbrain, I'm trying to finish this before dinner," Tony replied.
"What I want," Clint paused, making his way towards Tony, "is to make sure that you're okay."
Tony took a second to respond, hoping that Clint wouldn't notice the way his knee started bouncing.
"Okay?" Tony scoffed, acting like it was a stupid question to ask, "on a scale of one to ten, with ten being perfectly fine, I'm sitting at an eleven."
It wasn't like he didn't trust Clint, after all, he did save his life, he just didn't want Clint to worry about him. People think that Tony Stark has no feelings, that he's just a drunk that blows his money on ridiculous things. Why try to change the unchangeable? The more that people think he's just a shell of a man, a person put on this earth just for everyone to hate, the more alone time he gets. He doesn't have to be responsible for his actions, because no one expects anything else from him.
"Tony-"
"What?" Tony snapped. He quickly turned around, and stood up, brushing the already not-so-neat pile of papers that was on the desk onto the floor.
"What do you expect me to say?"
He sighed, sitting back down again. Tony didn't want to take it out on Clint, he was just trying to help. And Tony's emotions were strung high this morning due to the event that occurred and the sleepless night that followed. Clint didn't deserve the fight that was coming.
"I'm fine," Tony whispered, starting to fidget with his gadget once more.
Clint sighed. "You always are," he said, patting Tony's shoulder on the way out.
xx
