"Is she going to be alright?"

"I think so. She lost a lot of blood and has a few bruised ribs, but other than that, she's fine."

"Oh."

"Yeah.

You have a lot of explaining to do."

"Believe me, I know. But let me tell [Y/N] first. She deserves to know."

You felt something grab your arm, lightly squeezing it. A hand. It's a hand, you thought, slowly awakening. The touch seemed to ignite a small fire within you, suddenly making it absolutely necessary to open your eyes. At first, it seemed almost impossible, but it soon got easier, giving you the ability to partially crack open one eye.

"She's awake!" the person next to you announced, squeezing your hand once more.

As both of your eyes opened, you were able to look at your surroundings. Panic spread through your relatively limp body as you realized you didn't know where you were. It became harder to breathe, your chest constricting on your lungs.

"Hey, hey [Y/N]. You're fine. I'm right here, it's me. You're safe."

You recognized the voice, instantly creating a calm aura around you. As your eyes followed the sound, they met those unforgettable forehead wrinkles.

"Son of a bi*tch," you chuckled, your laugh soon turning to a cough.

"Take it easy, princess. You're not healed yet," someone else said, their tone dripping with sarcasm. The voice sounded familiar, although you couldn't place where you knew it from. Turning your head, you saw who it belonged to.

Standing on the other side of the bed was none other than the Tony Stark. CEO of Stark Industries, billionaire, and Iron Man. Of course I know his voice!

"Mark," you wheezed, "Mark, am I dead?" You squeezed his hand tighter, hoping to figure out if this was all some sort of alternate reality. For most of your life, Tony Stark was one of the many people you looked up to as a biomedical engineer. And his work with elemental properties was absolutely fascinating. You had only hoped of meeting your idol in person, and apparently your dream was coming true.

"Well that's new," the billionaire cut in. Your eyes squinted at him, wondering what he could've meant by that.

"I guess you've got some explaining to do, Mark," he teased, confusing you even more. He bowed his head, leaving the two of you alone.

Looking back towards your friend, you saw a sliver of guilt in his eyes. Adding that to the list of things you needed to ask about, you tried to take a deep breath. Key word tried. Before you even started, it was like your body knew what you were going to do and decided to cause you some more pain.

"Don't hurt yourself, [Y/N]. Wouldn't need anymore of that," he whispered, looking down at his lap.

Once the coughing died down, you were able to start on your growing list of questions. "Why'd Tony Stark say your name like that?"

Mark met your eyes before looking down once again. You squeezed his hand, hoping to get the answer out of him.

He sighed, before mumbling something you couldn't understand.

"What?"

"My name's not Mark."

You gasped, or at least as best as you could, confusion running through your mind. Why couldn't he just tell me? Why did he feel the need to hide this? "Why did you lie to me?" you whispered, hurt clear in your voice. Tears started forming in your eyes. As they fell, he reached his free hand up to brush them away with his thumb. Once they were mostly gone, he spoke.

"Hey, it's not that I don't trust you. I do, I trust you with my life [Y/N], it's just that I didn't know you well in the beginning. And I have a dangerous job, I didn't want you getting caught up in it. I-"

"What's your real name?" you cut him off, wanting to know the truth as quickly as possible.

"Clint," he sighed, removing his hand from your cheek.

"Clint Barton." The tears fell once more, not knowing how to feel about this whole situation.

"I've known you for years," you whispered, more to yourself than him, "you couldn't find one time to tell me?"

"You don't know how many times I wanted to, [Y/N]. There's was days when I couldn't even see you because I wanted to tell you so badly. And I was going to, I finally got the clearance to, but then things happened, and I couldn't tell you the day I was planning on doing it. Then one day turned into two, two into three, three into four and so on."

You gasped, pulling your hand out of his. He left me, you thought, the memories of the past month rushing back. The loneliness of not having your best friend with you. Going through everyday thinking you lost yet another person you cared about. All of the late nights you spent crying into your pillow because you felt like nothing was going right. It was all because of him.

"You left me."

"You left me!" you repeated, hitting his shoulder, more tears cascading down your skin. "You left me with no texts, no calls, not even a word about where you were or what you were doing!"

"Do you know how worried I was, Mark- Clint. Do you know how worried I was? I spent nights-Nights!- worrying about you, wondering what happened to you and if you were okay. And this went on for weeks! How do you think I felt, getting left by another one of my best friends? You know how I felt when Bea left and you made me go through that again!"

"[Y/N]," he whimpered, tears welling in his eyes as well. He engulfed you in a hug, making sure to not squeeze you too tightly. You tried to fight it, but it just hurt to much. So you let him comfort you, comfort you from the pain he caused.

"I'm so sorry. I never meant for any of this to happen," he whispered in your ear, slowly pulling away only after your tears started to stop. "I can explain, if you'll let me. I promise I never wanted this for you." He paused, waiting for you to respond.

Could you forgive him for the pain he caused you?

You took a breathe, making up your mind.

"Okay."

I went into writing this fic hoping that anyone could read it, because it would just have gender neutral pronouns like you and [y/n] and stuff, but I realized I used feminine pronouns in the beginning of this chapter, meaning I might have used them in other chapters as well, so if you would like me to publish this book with different pronouns, please let me know! You can either privately message me, or just comment on here. It wouldn't cause me any trouble and it'd be a really easy thing, so please lmk! I would like for everyone to be able to enjoy this book. And I am going to continue writing this in feminine pronouns only because I am a female but I will easily publish another version of this with different pronouns!
