Katya had never been good at sleeping through the night. Growing up, nights where when the fights broke loose. A little later on, it was when she'd stay up and hope that she'd eventually hear her dad come home again. When she moved out, the habit had remained, the woman rarely able to make it through the night without getting up to smoke.
This night was no different in that sense.
She looked at the girl sleeping next to her, almost unable to take her eyes off of the doll as the shimmering moonlight illuminated her skin, making her look like an angel. She gently slipped out of Trixie's arms, careful not to wake her angel before she grabbed a cigarette and stepped out on her balcony. She had felt more at peace in Trixie's arms than what she usually did alone in her bed, but even so, her sleepless curse could not be broken.
As rain started to fall, Katya thought back to a rainy night years before. She closed her eyes and could almost see herself in her small bed, light blue walls with painted clouds surrounding her, and family pictures hanging on her walls.
"Mommy, can you tell me a bedtime story?" Katya had asked.
Her mom stared blankly out the window where rain was pouring down and a man was getting into an unknown car.
"Mommy?" The child asked again, growing nervous.
"Ye-yes, of course I can." The woman finally responded, sitting down on the child's bedside.
"Tell a new one."
"A new one? Okay.. yeah, a new one." Her mom had said, tears shining in her eyes, but she soon hid her sorrow behind a smile. "Once upon a time there was a girl who believed that love was the greatest thing of all. In her mind, nothing was more important than love.
Many men in her town wanted to be her husband, but she said no to them all. They offered gold and riches, but the girl didn't care, because all she wanted was love and none of them made her feel it.
One day, a man traveled into the town. He was very rich, and liked to flaunt it to everyone, so at first the girl despised him..."
"What is despised?" Katya asked innocently.
"To despise is to not like someone very much, darling." Her mom explained, a small smile finding her at her sweet daughter's innocence.
"Oh okay."
"So at first the girl despised him. But then on her way home that day she was almost hit by a car. She was so scared, but the man bravely threw himself in front of her and got them both away from the danger. The girl was amazed because even tho the man didn't know her, he had saved her. And from that day on, the man took root in her heart, and over time the love she had for him only grew." Her mother told her.
"What happened to them? Did they get married? Did they live happily ever after?" Katya asked.
"Yes, they did get married. And her love remained ever-growing."
Katya had fallen asleep right after that, not noticing at the time how her mom had avoided the "happily ever after"-question. Still, the memory was a happy one to her, simply because it was the last time she'd seen her mom be anything close to the person she really was. With time, Katya saw how right her mom had been. Her love for the man was truly ever-growing. That was why his actions ended up breaking her so much.
A silver tear fell from the girl's ocean blue eyes as she took another drag of her cigarette. Suddenly she heard soft footsteps behind her, before warm arms wrapped around her waist from behind.
"Come back to bed." Trixie whispered in her ear.
"In a minute, I promise... But can we... can we please just stay like this for a second?" Katya asked.
"Of course."
Katya leaned into Trixie's touch, closing her eyes and hoping that they'd eventually be able to answer the question her mom had avoided.
Hoping they'd state their answer without hesitation.
And most of all hoping the answer to that question would be; "yes".
