"It smells delicious." Katya told Kasha as she and Trixie reached the kitchen doorway.
"Let me guess; Pat isn't coming down?" Mrs. Davis said as she set the glasses on the table.
"I don't think so, no. But I think we had a little breakthrough, she looked at me properly, saw that I wasn't a kid anymore and... she cried a lot. That seems like it could be the first step towards accepting the situation in my book."
"That's really good, Katya. I'm happy for you, for you both. She deserves a new start, and you deserve to have your mother back." Kasha said.
As their conversation continued Trixie walked curiously into the living room, noticing the impressive grand piano in the left corner of the room and the beautiful guitars sat on stands next to it. With careful movements she lifted an acoustic one up and carried it over to the couch.
"These are beautiful." The brown-eyed girl said to Katya who had entered the room once she heard the sound of plucked strings.
"Yeah, mom always believed that playing an instrument was part of the standard education, she also had a beautiful singing voice. I myself was never good at music tho." Katya replied as she walked over to the other girl. "Do you play?"
"Not a lot, but my grandpa used to. He was a real folk and country man, so even after he passed I tried to keep the skill alive. I don't know many songs, but I know some at least. I think he wanted me to be a singer-songwriter tho."
"I had no idea you could even really sing." The blue-eyed girl said, feeling slightly bad.
"Yeah well, I don't think I'll be a country star anytime soon, but I've got a voice at least." Trixie replied jokingly.
"Could you play something? Sing something?" Katya asked, curious to hear how good the doll really was.
"Oh yeah sure, if you want? But won't it interrupt lunch?"
"There's still some time until it's all done, there should be time for a song." Mrs. Davis interjected with a smile.
"Perfect." Katya said with a bright smile.
Nervously Trixie pushed her hair behind her ear before her slightly shaking fingers found the strings, her hands starting to play a familiar tune.
"I took my love, I took it down
I climbed a mountain and I turned around
And I saw my reflection in the snow-covered hills
'Til the landslide brought me down" Trixie sang in a voice as warm as honey.
Suddenly careful footsteps could be heard on the upper floor, and then on the staircase. A frail woman slowly making her way down the staircase, her fingers gripping the railing as she followed the sound of the music. Trixie was too engaged in her playing to notice the woman, but Katya and Kasha however both viewed her with shock and joy.
"Oh, mirror in the sky
What is love?
Can the child within my heart rise above?
Can I sail through the changin' ocean tides?" The doll sang, but as she continued to the next line, the frail woman's voice sang along too.
"Can I handle the seasons of my life?"
Trixie stopped singing for a moment then, but her fingers continued plucking the strings skillfully as they all listened to the sorrowful but beautiful voice of Katya's mother.
"Well, I've been afraid of changin'
'Cause I've built my life around you
But time makes you bolder
Children get older
And I'm getting older too"
No one spoke as Trixie played the interlude, the moment too fragile for interruptions. But once the next vocal part came, Trixie and Pat both sang in perfect harmony.
"Well, I've been afraid of changin'
'Cause I've built my life around you
But time makes you bolder
Children get older
And I'm getting older too
I'm getting older too"
The very last part Trixie let Pat sing alone, the doll finding herself mesmerized by the fact that this was the same woman whom she had just seen be almost unable to see that her own daughter had aged. And yet here she was, singing her heart out to Landslide.
"So, take this love, take it down
Oh-oh, climb a mountain and you turn around
If you see my reflection in the snow-covered hills
Well, the landslide will bring it down
And if you see my reflection in the snow-covered hills
Well, the landslide will bring it down
Oh-ohh, the landslide will bring it down"
Once the music died out completely, Trixie's fingers stilling on the strings and the echo of the woman's voice fading out, they all remained still for a while. No one dared to speak or move, all waiting on Pat's cue.
"Landslide was one of my favorite songs when I was younger... it's so nice to hear it again..." Katya's mother said, her voice still frail but slightly more present than it had been upstairs.
"It's one of my favorites, well, other than Dolly's songs." Trixie replied with a kind smile.
"Dolly... She had some really great songs too... You have a beautiful voice... Trixie?" Pat said, clearly unsure if she had gotten the name right or not, so the doll gave her a nod to show that it was right.
"Thank you. You do too." Trixie said.
"That's very kind of you, thank you..."
Silence fell once more, and Pat seemed unsure of what to do with herself, clearly not used to being anywhere other than her room.
"Pat, lunch is almost ready, would you like to join us?" Kasha asked warmly.
"Ye-yeah, I would like that... I would like that.."
Katya quickly went to her mother's side, leading the woman to the kitchen table and helping her sit down. The brown-eyed doll stepped over to the corner and put the guitar down, stopping herself from screaming from shock when she saw that Katya had popped up behind her once she turned around.
"Jesus, you scared me." Trixie whispered with a laugh.
"Sorry." Katya said sheepishly, rubbing the back of her neck. "I just wanted to say thank you. I can't believe you got her to leave her room, and I am just so so grateful."
"You're welcome, but I just made her remember something she loved. She took those steps all by herself."
"You're amazing, you know that?" The blue-eyed girl said with a warm smile.
"I know, you are too." Trixie replied, kissing Katya sweetly before grabbing onto her hand. "Come on, let's join them."
And as they all sat down around the table, the conversation starting to flow naturally and the house filling with laughter once more, Katya felt her heart lighten. This was her family, she realized, and suddenly her childhood house was once again a home.
