"Your POV"
The sun shined bright through your window one chilly morning on an early spring day. You stretched your arms out and got out of bed, ready for the day ahead of you. You walked to the kitchen and greeted your father, and grandmother, who had just gotten up themselves.
"Good morning sweetie," grandma said to me with a smile, as she handed me a cup of hibiscus tea. "What do you have planned today?" she asked.
"Not much," I responded, "Just planning on doing some meditations and training later this afternoon." you said to her with a smile.
"Do me a favor and feed the chickens while your outside, (Y/N)." Dad said with his rough morning voice. It seemed to get worse, week after week. He was losing weight too. You knew he was getting sicker, yet the doctor couldn't find anything wrong with him. "Of course." you answered sympathetically.
You finished up your tea, and put on your haori that faded from light blue to a dark blue, over your uniform. You became a demon slayer 3 years ago. "I can't believe how long it's been" you thought to yourself. It felt like just yesterday you ran home, eager to tell your father that you had passed Final Selection, that his only daughter, his only child, accomplished what he wanted all his life.
Your father was a very frail man, always had been. He never moved much, but he was the smartest person in town. Everyone came to him for advice and answers, and he always seemed to have them. You looked up to him a lot, even though he was weak, it didn't stop him from getting up everyday, and raising you all by himself. He reminded you that the weak can be strong too.
When he was younger, he wanted to be a demon slayer, but his body never let him. He had the courage, he had the will to fight but there was no way he'd make it passed a demon. He practiced for years, yet it was never accomplished. Eventually, he fell sicker from all the training he had enured. He knew he had to stop. He had also just met your mother, who gave him a place to call home. After dad had stopped training, they tried and tried for a baby, but miscarriage after miscarriage, your parents started to lose hope, until you came along. Happy and healthy, all swaddled up in their arms until fate came calling.
You mother died, soon after you were born. You had made her sick, it was cause of you she wasn't there to help your dad like she always had. For the longest time you blamed yourself. Until your 12th birthday, when she came to you in a dream.
"(Y/N), sweetie, I'm in a safe place, and I look over you. I see the woman you are becoming, and I would do anything for you, so stop blaming yourself for my death. It was my time to leave you. Why? I'm not sure of that answer, but maybe one day we'll figure it out. Keep being strong, for your grandma, for your father and for you." That's when I woke up, I had only ever seen her in old pictures, but she was beautiful.
So from that day on, you swore, "I would live my life to the fullest. I wouldn't run from fear, I'd attack it. I wouldn't run from love, I'd fall in to it (which got my heart broken more than once, but hey, you gotta learn somehow). I wouldn't let things I could control, control me. This was my life, and it was my responsibility to never let my mother's death be in vain. She came to me in dreams when I needed her most. I miss what we never had" you thought to yourself, as your poured some grain into the chicken coop.
"No need to get down in the dumps" you reminded yourself, "You're gonna make momma sad." And with that, you ran off into the field behind your house, to meditate and practice your breathing.
Hours later after training , you hurried home before darkness to have dinner with your family. You were gone a lot, and you really didn't even live at home. The demon slayer life was a lonely, nomadic one, with lots of travel. But your tried to make it home to see your grandmother and father at least once a month.
You were greeted with the smell of dinner being cooked by your grandmother while she whistled an old song that "supposedly" warded off demons.
"Don't you worry about it grandma, I'll protect you from those nasty demons" you said to her as you sat down.
"Ha," she laughed, "what if you're not here?" she asked.
Immediately, you looked down in sadness, "She was right." you thought, "What was the point of me being a demon slayer, if I wasn't ever around to protect those that I loved? Most demon slayers have lost those close to them, that's why they join. I did it to make my father proud, and because I knew I had the potential. But grandma was right, I'm never around to protect them."
"Oh sweetie, I didn't mean to hurt your feelings!" She rushed over to me and gave me hug, "You are the bravest 20 year old I have ever met! Don't you worry about your father and I, we will be just fine." she said to me with a reassuring smile. She proceeded to tap my nose with the tip of her finger, like she normally did to make me feel better. And it had its way of doing so.
That night all 3 of you sat together, prayed, then enjoyed your meal as a family. You took the moment in, still thinking about what grandma said to you earlier. You knew she didn't mean it in a harmful way, it was simply a joke, but it was true, and you couldn't shake that feeling.
You helped with the dishes after you meal, and kissed them both goodnight. You then made your way to your room, and got ready for bed. Mentally, you was exhausted. You expected your crow to find you with a mission tomorrow morning so you laid down to try to get some sleep.
You had gotten over your worry about your family, but you realized you had spent all day thinking about them. You loved them very much, but you never worried, or really thought about them the way you did today. "Oh well" you said to yourself, "stop overthinking, you're just in your head, (Y/N)"
You closed your eyes, awaiting the next day ahead of you...
