Harlow Reed and Marcus Baker grew up the best of friends. One of Harlow's dads being Ellen's childhood best friend leaving it inevitable for Harlow, Marcus, and Max to become friends. Though she was friends with Max she was always closer to Marcus, the two just instantly becoming two peas in a pod.
