Veronica ignored mostly everyone after being chosen for the quest. She didn't say anything to her dad, who'd attempted to ground her in an effort to forbid her from joining the quest. She'd avoided Zoë, who'd been constantly bringing up joining the Hunters. She didn't speak to Evelyn, who'd still been in a perpetually angry state since gods knew when.
She did speak to Percy briefly, and it hadn't gone well. He ended up hanging upside down in a tree again.
She resumed not talking to anyone after that. She went straight to bed after dinner, had normal, boring dreams, and then woke up early as hell.
She made her way around the camp. It was something she did often, as Chiron believed that spending time relaxing in nature and breathing fresh air would lower her murderous rage. Veronica didn't really see what he meant, but okay.
As she made her way to the dining pavilion, she heard two girls talking. She paused, hiding behind a column. She couldn't see the girls all that well, based on how dark it was, but she knew their voices. How could she not with they way they'd been stalking her relentlessly? It was Zoë and Bianca. It sounded like they were arguing.
"It cannot be cured," Zoë was telling the younger Hunter. "Not quickly, at any rate."
"But how did it happen?" Bianca asked.
"A foolish prank," Zoë growled. "Those Stoll boys from the Hermes cabin. Centaur blood is like acid. Everyone knows that. They sprayed the inside of that Artemis Hunting Tour T-shirt with it."
Again, why does Artemis have merchandise? Veronica wondered.
"That's terrible!" Bianca cried.
"She will live," Zoë said. "But she'll be bedridden for weeks with horrible hives. There is no way she can go. It's up to me... and thee."
"But the prophecy," Bianca said. "If Phoebe can't go, we only have five. We'll have to
pick another."
"There is no time," Zoë said. "We must leave at first light. That's immediately. Besides, the prophecy said we would lose one."
Yeah, when the quest starts. Which it hasn't.
"In the land without rain," Bianca argued, "but that can't be here."
"It might be," Zoë said, though Veronica could tell she wasn't very convinced. "The camp has magic borders. Nothing, not even weather, is allowed in without permission. It could be a land without rain."
