Chiron had insisted they talk about what'd happened in the morning, which Veronica saw as a way to say, Hey, you're probably about to die. Nightie night!
It was hard to fall asleep, but Veronica eventually did.
She didn't always have normal dreams. She usually had dreams based on what she thought of, which was seemingly normal. This sometimes usually resulted in her finding herself placed in the roles of anyone at random. Other times, more commonly, she couldn't see or hear anything clearly. She felt her way through the dream. She felt emotions, feelings, sanity. She felt the tones of voices.
This night was the latter. She was feeling her way through the dream.
She was feeling the pain of abandonment. She was feeling alone. She felt regret, fear, knowledge she could never return home. She felt like sobbing. She didn't know why, but she did.
She felt confusion at this the next morning when Chiron called a war council. They all met in the sword arena, which Veronica chose not to question. Chiron and Quintus stood at the front by the weapon racks. Clarisse and Annabeth sat next to each other and led the briefing. Tyson and Grover sat as far away from each other as possible. Veronica sat beside Percy, ignoring the side glance Annabeth was giving her.
Also sitting there at the table were Juniper the tree nymph, Silena Beauregard, Travis and Connor Stoll, Beckendorf, Lee Fletcher and Jasmine, Eve, and even Argus, the hundred-eyed security chief.
If Argus was there, it had to be serious. The whole time Annabeth spoke, he kept all of his hundred blue eyes trained on her so hard his whole body turned bloodshot. It was very creepy.
"Luke must have known about the Labyrinth entrance," Annabeth said. "He knew everything about camp."
Annabeth had clear pride in her voice, like she still respected the little shit. Veronica sighed in quiet disappointment.
Juniper cleared her throat. "That's what I was trying to tell you last night. The cave entrance has been there a long time. Luke used to use it."
"Hold the hell up," Veronica said. "Luke used that entrance before any of us knew about it?"
Silena Beauregard frowned. "You knew about the Labyrinth entrance, and you didn't say anything?" she asked Juniper.
The tree nymph face turned green. "I didn't know it was important. Just a cave. I don't like yucky old caves."
"She has good taste," Grover said.
"I wouldn't have paid any attention except... well, it was Luke." She blushed a little greener.
