They ran away as fast as their legs could carry them. "This way!" Rachel yelled.
"Why should we follow you?" Annabeth demanded. "You led us straight into that death trap!"
"You led us to Geryon's ranch!" Veronica countered.
"Besides, it was the way you needed to go," Rachel panted. "And so is this. Come on!"
Annabeth didn't look happy about it, but she ran along with the rest of the group. Rachel seemed to know exactly where she was going. She led the group, Veronica being the only one that seemed to know which way to go before Rachel said. They whipped around corners and didn't even hesitate at crossroads. Once, Rachel said, "Duck!" and they all crouched as a huge axe swung over our heads. Then they kept going as if nothing had happened.
Veronica pointed at a room. "There!"
Rachel agreed with her and they made their way into the room. It was the size of a gymnasium with old marble columns holding up the roof. Veronica listened for sounds of pursuit, quickly realizing that they'd lost Luke and the others in the maze.
Ethan collapsed on the floor. "You people are crazy." He pulled off his helmet. His face gleamed with sweat.
Veronica bent down to his level. "Hm," she said, punching his shoulder. "Where have you been?"
"Really, Ron—"
"Call me Roni," Veronica interrupted, "and it'll be the last thing you hear."
"Come on," Ethan sighed. "It's nothing personal."
"He betrayed us, you sniveling twerp," she huffed.
Annabeth gasped. "I remember you! You were one of the undetermined kids in the Hermes cabin, years ago."
Ethan glared at her. "Yeah, and you're Annabeth. I remember."
"What—what happened to your eye?"
"Yeah, what turned you into One-Eyed Willie?" Veronica asked.
Ethan looked away, and Veronica sensed it was a touchy subject.
"You must be the half-blood from my dream," Percy said. "The one Luke's people cornered. It wasn't Nico after all."
"Who's Nico?"
"No one important," Veronica said quickly. "Just a kid I'm attempting to adopt."
"Wha—" Ethan began.
Annabeth approached Ethan. "Why were you trying to join up with the wrong side?"
Ethan sneered. "There's no right side," he said. "The gods never cared about us. Why shouldn't I—"
